Malt 379
My boss the ginger prick and his accountant have been paying the wrong amount of tax leaving me with a sum to pay back! Ordinarily this would have been picked up on my payslip! But as I've said he is a prick and hasn't given me one payslip since I started 8 months ago! Am I still liable for the outstanding balance or because of the lack of payslips is he liable to pay? Cheers folks! If you have been in receipt of money that should have been going to HMRC then you will have to pay it back.. I'd take it up with the tax office if I was you, could be something dodgy happening there.. Maybe you were on the wrong tax code or something. .

Kay 3,709
most employers stop tax at the rate they're instructed to by the tax people for each employer .. if you haven't been given any pay slips by your employer are you sure they are actually stopping any tax & the tax office are getting any at all ? What usually happens if you start a new job & your new employer hasnt a p45 from you.. they simply stop it at emergency rate .. if they had been doing that chances are you would have paid more than you should have so would probably get a rebate once a proper tax code was sorted for you

The Seeker 3,048
Unfortunately if you owe tax the inland revenue will want this back. If your employed you should receive a tax code notice at the start of the year telling you what tax you will be paying. It's the employees responsibility to ensure the correct level of tax is being paid,. Out of all govt departments the tax office are the most aggressive I have dealt with. They will probably just amend your tax code to reclaim it ove the next year. As suggested the only way to be sure is phone your local tax office. Good luck.
Wxm 1,638
Would also depend on is this is your 1st job this year as you can earn upto 10 x your tax code in 12 months before you have to pay tax
Tiercel 6,986
Are you being paid cash in hand or by bank transfer? You say your employer is deducting tax but not enough, how did you come to know this? Have you had a letter from the tax man saying you owe tax? Do you have a written record of how many hours you work a week? Your best bet is, as you have been told above go to your local tax office or at least ring them and try and make an apointment to sort it out. TC
day worker 296
I've rung the tax office today and yes I am liable for the monies owed! But at the end of the year they'll write to me with a final figure at which point I'll be able to write a letter stating the problems I've had with my employer! They may at this point chase him for the money if they feel he's at fault! I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!
Chid 6,603
Did you not know you wasn't paying enough tax ? Surely you should of had an idea by how much money you was coming home with to how many hours worked ..
baw 4,360
Why don't you speak to your employer and find out what tax he is being paying, what money he has you down for earning and come to an agreement? Can't spell it out any clearer than that
day worker 296
My now ex employer won't speak to me and hasn't done for over a month! The fact is he doesn't know what's going on and the accountant doesn't appear to know what's going on either! My p45 has been lost which my dick of a foreman has only just informed me of! Like I said if he had provided me with payslips it would have been obvious! The only thing this ginger b*****d is missing is a cowboy hat!
