Dogs Wont Keep Hold Of Rabbit

Recommended Posts

the bitch is 4 and the other 14 months catching plenty of rabbits had 16 last night they keep putting them down right by me and run of to catch again

Is the dog letting them go on purpose ? So that it can course and catch them again ? What cross is it ?

I'm no expert but it might sound like that is happening, what is the dog like retrieving a dummy etc ...

Are they comfortable in or around your space ,??if 2 of them are at it , it would appear everything is fine in their ability , it's just the connection of the last 3 foot or so, ever disciplined or confronted for jumping up or similar ??

The dog may be having to change its mind set coming into your zone , from feeling predator to feeling prey like due to lack of confidence in that zone,

With the young dog,,, you could try teaching it the hold comand,, by repeatedly getting to hold objects dummy ect,, if the dog is trained to sit on command ,, you could also try and use that at the same time,,,

With the older dog,, you might have more problem

Personaly,...if your dog is actually catching rabbits,..willingly fetching them back,...but,.. due to its soft mouth,.is spitting them out as he gets near,...I would not worry...

Truth is,...Lurchers can suddenly turn, hardmouthed,..but they rarely,.if ever,.become soft again,...so,.hang on in there.....

Don't take them out together: lamping rabbits should be one man one dog: focus on the one dog rather than having to juggle extra dog, lamp etc. Work on retrieving dummies at night on the lamp in rabbit free areas such as a playing field, even your back garden. Lots of praise, crouch down. No shouting, keep calm and chill out.

don't think its that or training really, as got 2 dogs here been trained the same way to bring back, and the older dog as always been the same bring them back ,and will put them on the floor by you , so got to get to them quick.lol But the younger dog holds on to them and never looses them, as he don't like to give them to you really lol, but he will stand still with rabbit, its just different temps I think

both the same on there own don't get me wrong only the odd few get back in the hedge but you got to keep putting lamp onto find the rabbit there its like someone said your carrying game lamp and battery and trying to get down to find rabbit running round your feet
