ferret 1 0
I picked a Hob up the other day to replace my old Pole cat that passed away, the guy had three in a run but looking at them none seemed to have been handled much, apparantly they're now about 3 months old and seemed fine when I first caught him up although he did Hiss a bit at me but now since he has been in his new Hutch he hasn't stopped biteing. he bit me this morning when I fed him! he bit the missus when she put her hand in and now he's bit my lad whole also tried to handle him, can anyone give me any advice please on how I can stop it or can it be stopped? Cheers Jasper hi mate i had a jill just like your hob it would bite and hiss all the time for the first couple of weeks it just takes a lot of handling 2 or 3 times a day not just when you are feeding them and a h**l lot of perserverence now my kids can handle her and she is now cracking little worker too just spend a lot more time with yours handling him and i am shore your hob will turn out just like my jill all the best Quote Link to post
bill88 6
just force your knuckle into its mouth when it tries to bite, get it past the teeth though else he'll have it off. Worked for me every time. Quote Link to post
Malt 379
Hi mate, there are lots of websites on the net with tips on how to nip train ferrets. The problem with these sites, is that sometimes they give conflicting info. The best thing to do, is to visit a load of them, then build up your own view on what to do. Ferts are like people though, they all have different personalities so what works for one might not work for another. I'm having problems myself with my albino jill, she just won't seem to learn that biting is not the right way to ask to be put down. She's got a weeks worth of trying to learn, with lots of handling or she just might find herself on the wrong end of an accupell. I want to work her, so a biting fert is no good to me, even if she is cute. Try using the search forum box, as this question comes up quite often. I pasted some links to some good sites on biting in one of them, but I can't remember which one it was. If I get time later, I will post some more in this thread. Quote Link to post

boris b 1
Have a bucket of water with you if it bites you put your hand in the water it will let go and pretty soon relise that biting you ends in a swim . The ferret in most case's will not pursist with the biting . If it does theres a good chance its see's humans as the enemy and if so will not be cured from its love of biting . Quote Link to post

boris b 1
Its biting you because it doesn't respect you . Theres different ways to gain the animals respect the way I have mentioned is one . Its a way that has worked for me and worked for plenty of people I know . At the end of the day in a ideal world you will have ferrets that have been handled from a early age that no humans are not a threat and are actually a good thing , But you will also have the creatures that need culling and when you find yourself in that situation thats what must be done . Crow 1
It always amazes me when I read such threads 1) NEVER use gloves to handle your ferrets - if they bite so what, it doesn't really hurt does it? Gloves make it difficult for you to know just how hard (or not) your grip is. And besides, you want the ferret to get used to your smell and feel, not that of the glove. 2) NEVER cover your hand with a foul smelling/tasting substance - you want the ferret to view the smell of you as a pleasurable experience. 3) ALWAYS give a negative and immediate response to the ferret when it nips, but make it a response associated with your hand. Use the finger joint in the mouth trick as has been advised; Give the ferret something to eat/drink to distract it. Pick it up in the normal way but don't faff around - make an assured movement and lift the ferret (if you're right handed use your left hand to pick it up). Then, bend the first finger of your right hand tightly to make the first joint tight and hard. Holding the ferret push this joint fully into the ferrets mouth. Yes, it might bite, but it won't kill you will it! Push it in far enough to force the ferrets mouth wide open, that way it's both uncomfortable and it means the ferret can't exert any further pressure to bite. In no time at all the ferret will try to pull away. When this happens make a fuss of it. Do this a few times every time you pick the ferret up and it will soon stop biting. Crow Quote Link to post

jasper65 6
cheers all for the replies its much apreciated . I'm now giving up on this Monster!! I have been bringing him in the house in a large open topped box so he gets used to everything and now and again picking him up, everytime anyone picks the bloody thing up it throws a wobbly, it screams in temper the last few times and really goes for it. A lad looked at it yesterday and told me its well over 3 months as its pretty much full grown!! I'm not saying I'm a mamby people but there is no way I'm letting this nut case bite me , its not like a ferret kit which I could probably put up with, this things about 5ft long , seriously though would anyone really let this nutter bite them? cause I value my fingers too much .... I'm now pretty desperate for a couple of Ferrets now the birds going.... FERRETS, FERRETS, FERRETS, DESPERATLY WANTED NORFOLK/LINCOLSHIRE AREA, PLEASE CONTACT ME... Cheers Jasper Quote Link to post
