Imo there are two types of aggressive ferets....Them that nip and them that maul you through fear... Nippers are easy to get round (It's got feck all to do with respect imo, I don't think ferrets apply rational thinking when it comes to fear biting). Them that bite through fear are a serious problem and have no place in my court. I took in a rescued youngster from a local keeper, found wondering the lane. Quarantined her for a few days and then put her in with my others, lots of patience and tlc was given to this ferret and it still hissed and attacked me. Like I say there is a difference twixt nipping and fear/aggressive biting, she was humanely dispatched. The problem is just a serious as an aggressive dog imo. Fortunately I've only come across one such beast in nigh on twenty years!

i have had the same problem with the kit i have at the moment and the one i brought up through the summer. what i did was pick them up and everytime the nipped i made a hiss sound right in the face. this works excellent so it does as they identify the sound with something that doesnt like being bitten. it took it right out of them completly. also spit on the palm of your hand when you handle them and let them lick it off. i guarantee these two methods will work great, i have seen the results myself first hand.

cheers all for the replies its much apreciated . I'm now giving up on this Monster!! I have been bringing him in the house in a large open topped box so he gets used to everything and now and again picking him up, everytime anyone picks the bloody thing up it throws a wobbly, it screams in temper the last few times and really goes for it.

A lad looked at it yesterday and told me its well over 3 months as its pretty much full grown!! I'm not saying I'm a mamby people but there is no way I'm letting this nut case bite me , its not like a ferret kit which I could probably put up with, this things about 5ft long :whistling:, seriously though would anyone really let this nutter bite them? cause I value my fingers too much ....

I'm now pretty desperate for a couple of Ferrets now the birds going....

  • 2 months later...

I asked an old Gamekeeper many years ago how to stop a ferret biting. "I found" he said jokingly -"if you cut off its tail, that will cure it - preferably from just behind the head"

I have recently just lost lost one off my jills and she never bit. The one I have left occasionally tries a nip but she has never caught me yet however it is only a matter of time. I am a believer in the knuckle in the mouth and have found this has worked in the past.

I picked a Hob up the other day to replace my old Pole cat that passed away, the guy had three in a run but looking at them none seemed to have been handled much, apparantly they're now about 3 months old and seemed fine when I first caught him up although he did Hiss a bit at me but now since he has been in his new Hutch he hasn't stopped biteing. he bit me this morning when I fed him! he bit the missus when she put her hand in and now he's bit my lad whole also tried to handle him, can anyone give me any advice please on how I can stop it or can it be stopped?

Cheers
