I picked a Hob up the other day to replace my old Pole cat that passed away, the guy had three in a run but looking at them none seemed to have been handled much, apparantly they're now about 3 months old and seemed fine when I first caught him up although he did Hiss a bit at me but now since he has been in his new Hutch he hasn't stopped biteing. he bit me this morning when I fed him! he bit the missus when she put her hand in and now he's bit my lad whole also tried to handle him, can anyone give me any advice please on how I can stop it or can it be stopped?

What i would do is flood it with food ,more than it can possibly eat , dont handle for a week or so, just feed it to death,is is snatching food & generally behaving skittish at feeding times ?

handle him several times a day,he will soon calm down, patience , and confidence when handling,will do the trick,

when I open the door he is off in the other section but jabs towards me with his nose, the bloody thing then goes for it and charges forward for the big bite, he's also a bit Hissy! you don't think by any chance he could be too old to change now or can he still be won over?

pair of heavy duty gloves and handle it until it stops trying to bite and relaxes and hangs in your hand do this three times a day until you feel you can take off the gloves and do same again. he will learn that biting doesn't achieve anything and stop it. don't put him down until he is calm other wise he will think biting makes you leave him alone, and handle him after hes been fed i have one here that hasn't bitten me in a year but bit me nine times the day he came in and two of these bites were through my fingernails and he attacked me every time i went to the run he would hit the mesh at full pelt to get to me so he meant it if you have the patience he will come right

Tony, as ferretlove said over feed it and I always find that squirty cream on your palm works a treat. I have had a similar problem recently, I left my three ferrets with someone whilst I went on holiday, when I went they were like kittens ands were handled daily by me and my eldest daughter. When I returned they were nipping, this person has kept ferrets and was supposed to be confident with them, I think they were strangled and the gaunletts on my cage were proof of the incompetence. You live and learn........

Put vinegar on your hands!!! That will stop the little fecker from biting you!! Although it smells a bit it really works.

I just hoiked him out a while ago and he was hissing and snarling, this time I wore gloves and he locked onto them big time and went threw them , I stuck some vinegar on them like Richard said and boy he didn't like that but It also put him off me handling him.

 

Just out of Interest can you get Muzzles for them just for the earley stages of handling? it would be good if I could just until he gets used to be handled....

Tony, try the squirty cream, I promise they love it and he will come to look forward to your hands in his cage rather than being aggressive. You can get muzzles but you will have fun trying to get it on............

Well i am thinking if the previous owner was reluctent to handle due to getting bitten , then food wasnt going to be plentyfull & any others in the same cage / court would scrap over it,sibling rivalry if you like, so i really think if this ferret is bombarded with food & water then in a week or so it may just be enough to make the animal think '' i dont have to snatch at food & wolf it down .

 

Maybe his behaviour is fear induced (the back & forth attack you bit) if this ferrets had very little handling it will be fearfull of hands just as it would if its been walloped by its previous owner, even if you get it to accept foods not going to run out ,handling may be a little to much of a scensory overload right now for the ferret hence the biting when you handled yesterday, i would imagine its a little like putting your feet to the floor after you have been in bed for 3 months solid , it feels strange

 

I dont think the ferret cant be brought round , just a little time & patience

your ferret will probibaly come right,i think hes a bit scared ,hes away from his mates,housed by his self and to top it off thers a total stranger trying to pick him up.

dont go banging straight into the hutch talk quietly to him for a few mins first see if he comes to you .

it takes a bit off time.
