morton 5,368
If you own and run a Saluki based lurcher then first learn patience and understanding, then learn some more, then a bit more, its that simple?. 6 Quote Link to post

baw 4,360
hi all need a bit of advise in regards to saluki training the recall is acceptable but a recent problem is the dog catches then buggers off across the field and when i get close he runs away just started doing it recently and it's becoming a real pain has anyone got a few pointers of what i can do. i'm not looking for perfect retrieving although that would be nice cheers atb It's a saluki mate, just be grateful it can f***ing catch something the dogs obviously amazed itself by this rare feat and wants to do a massive lap of honor 1 Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
Face facts thay just not that type of dog to bring stuff back to hand not seen 1 do it yet as for running off the best thing is to stay clam and keep at it seen me standing for 2 hours waiting not as bad now thank god good luck mate I'm looking after a young coursing bred dog at the minute he's had 16 rabbits to date and every single one is brought straight back to hand still alive and handed over without fuss as long as there's no other dogs about. Its owner has never taught it to rietrive and isn't into rabbiting anyway.my feathered bitch tries to bring everything back to me no matter how big.granted a lot won't retrieve but a few do and do it well. jigsaw 11,899
I have a few saluki lurchers and a saluki full bred bitch and I have to say they are as obedient as my kelpie x.Ive never had an issue with them, easy going and does what their told.I have a pup of 8 weeks old here from the both of them and I cant wait to get him reared.Im looking forward to the summer and bringing him out and about and on to become another grand little dog.Ive never actually trained him to do anything except jump stuff, hes just gone and sorted all the other things himself.I read the comments about recall and stubborness and either im a genius with the dogs(not a chance of that)or im the luckiest man about, lol.my sire to the pups has retrieved a ''big rabbit'' from 3 fields away last season and has retrieved many others too,hes broken to sheep and hes a hell of a guard dog too.lets hope his pups will be along the same lines, 2 Quote Link to post
BOLIO1 1,078
This bitch is more than 7/8 saluki and is pictured here aged exactly 7 months retrieving a ferreted rabbit. She was almost as fast on the retrieve as on the run out. Not due to any training....just good bonding imho! 3 Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
I manage to take four pures out at a time plus a coursing dog n spaniel never have no chew, sure when they where pups odd bit here and there, but ya work ya way through it, the pups I have on now are superb recall, these pups have never even heard a raised voice, am determined never to shout at em or even check em ,, will use what I have learned over me last three saluki and other dogs and am sure they will benefit from it, shouting never got me anywhere, nor di the odd dig Ive given em, walking away gained me far more, hopefully my new method will work out ran with saluki club for three seasons now as yet I have not seen one dog fail to return to its owner after running, not one person has lost a dog , funny innit for dogs with such bad reps Edited January 28, 2014 by arcticgun 5 Quote Link to post
FUJI 17,328
12 month old here..retrieves beautiful, like Jigsaw said ive not done anything different with this dog to that of my others..hes obedient, recall is A1, sits; lies even gives paws lol, jump anything,100% stockbroken..I ain't no genius at training mutts either..all I can say is there must be more bad owners of this type than the dogs themselves? DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Has anyone had both a pure saluki and coursing bred dog? Is there much difference with regards to training and behaviour between the two? eg: do the pures have a more sensitive nature? ect.... Cheers...
