I don't think it's a threat? All it takes is for a child to put something in their mouth that a rat has just pissed on. It will probally take 3 visits at your neighbours so that's a score a visit I think that's quite good tbh

Both involve travelling to domestic premises (costs involved); both involve dealing with problems (some turn out to be easy to sort out, some are difficult to resolve).

The easy faults can be sorted out by someone with no specialist knowledge, the difficult faults cannot be. If you call out a specialist and the problem turns out to be easy to resolve, who's fault is that?

So let us assume you get your next door neighbour in to sort out the problem and something goes wrong? Does the neighbour have the skills to understand what he is doing is wrong? Is he insured if something goes badly wrong?

If the council is charging £65, then that's a subsidised price. It's cheap, NOT overpriced.

 

Let's just make this clear for the hard of thinking; I've got no interest in doing domestic rat jobs, especially at that kind of price. The original poster came on here asking what the best course of action was and has been given some sound advice about how to deal with it. He or she may choose to go down the DIY route, and if so, that's their choice.

 

Some folks seem to get a big thrill out of waving their willies around and telling the world that they don't need to employ professionals because they can do it themselves. Good for them. Craic on lads and lasses, there's an old saying that applies: "You can't educate Pork"........

Car mechanics, tiling, furniture assembly, plumbing, pest control, gardening...the list goes on and on, lots of people dabble to a level and know when to stop and get help, many people are very capable of DIY in all manner of areas.

But to be fair there are very few RICH pest controllers, this is not an industry known for high pricing.

Lol, Not kidding its always ends in cock measuring ,with a bit good advise the lad can deal with the rat problem without extensive costs or putting his family at risk.its clear we could all get a nasty rat disease from fishing, shooting or taking the kids to the park.im no pest controller by trade or trained ,but i have managed to use a bit of the grey stuff and set safe poison tubes, traps and with a bit of shooting and cleared some fairly big rat problems in poultry environments and horses.and managed to keep on top of it.hope the op gets sorted and not fed up or listening to drivel,

Looking at the ops profile he keeps ferrets and guns job sorted no poison or traps. There isn't alot of cash in pest control but this is a hunting forum if the folk on here can't sort a few rats properly it's a poor show.

some years ago we rented a farm cottage whilst we built our own house , the cottage was one of four that were built to the rear of the hall and were originally for farm labourers, the biggest of the cottages was rented by two retired schoolmistresses ,at the side of the house was a large pond and at the rear was part of a moat then stables and pigstys ,this place was alive with rats so one of the ladies asked the gamekeeper what to do ,the keeper told her that he would lay some poison down , she told him that she would prefer them to be trapped like her father used to do , Roy the keeper gave her two live trap cages and a bit of advise and left her to it ,after that it seemed every time you looked out the window one of the old girls was walking down to the pond with a cage in her hand.

OldTrapCollector, I hope my comments are not coming across as a competition? Well if they have come across as such then I apologise. I agree with Deker that there are many instances where people can DIY; generally people know when to stop, but not always! It is the small number of people who do not know when they are in over their heads that can cause the really big issues.

My issue had been with MR TEA POT's reference to £65 being a rip off, when it clearly isn't. If people want to DIY then go right ahead. If anyone has an issue with £65 being too high then they need to calculate the cost of running a business. Doing it for a hobby, doing it to be kind to a neighbour, doing it for sport, has a very different cost structure.

 

If someone asks me to organise some pest control, I give them a price for the job. Please don't come back to me after I give a price saying they can get their mates to do it cheaply or free! My answer is always, 'well go ahead then, get your mates to do it!' I do not have a problem with anyone doing pest control for sport or as a hobby, but I do not and my prices reflect the fact that I am running a business.
