Nick3439 83
Maybe I'm unusual but I only take enough for the freezer/fridge 2-6 rabbits a time once or twice a week is quite enough to keep me going; chuck a few shot pigeons in there and my food bill with the veg garden and chickens is pretty much nil... Does anyone else "subsistence hunt"? When I get permissions; (of which I have a few) I usually explain that this is what I do; and whilst some farmers/owners explain they'd rather have a 'total war' on pest species, but a lot, nod, smile wryly and say "like a 'fairy tale' old poacher, but done legal?" And let me crack on... 4 Quote Link to post
Longers7 720
I'm the same as you in that aspect mate, easy to wipe out rabbit population ferreting, at least doing it your way the rabbits get to breed and recover their numbers as your not wiping them all out, which will keep giving you sport and food...... As long as the land owners are happy, Quote Link to post
Nick3439 83
Longers; where I am the rabbit population has never got back to it's pre-Myxy days, and regularly gets hit again; so I'm even more mindful to let it stay balanced... Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I'm like that around where I live, I've got a good chunk of land, and it's beautiful to hunt. But disease has thinned the population down to a few scattered bunnys here and there. I don't really ferret them, and I never shoot them. I let the dogs hunt them, and some get caught, in the natural order of things. And strangely enough, those are the ones I eat. And the ones I enjoy catching the most. When I want numbers, and graft for the ferrets and dogs, I have to travel, and then it tends to be about pest control, as that's why I've been allowed on the land, and I suppose I look at those rabbits very difficulty. They are a pest that needs culling in sufficient numbers, in order to preserve other things. But I'd still never want to win the 'war' and wipe them out. . . . 1 Quote Link to post
paulus 26
balance is all that's required for good countryside pest management Quote Link to post

Darren Stoodley 2
I only take what i need mate and when i need it as the oaps around my neck of the woods still love their rabbit. Its the best way to keep a steady population on my permission but we call it harvesting Edited January 23, 2014 by Darren Stoodley 1 Quote Link to post
