jigsaw 11,863
went out this morning with the son and we dragged along sonic taz and the young pup from england.we arrived at 9 a.m. and let loose the mutts.I got the 223 ready and we ventured into the rough scrub and gorse ridden land.it starts out not too bad but eventually you reach the base of the hills and its onwards and up wards.luckily today we didnt have to get to that point. We were ambling along checking the ridges for a goat and we noticed the droppings of the mob were everywhere.then sonic put his nose to the ground and was busy working the scent.I knew then we were not far from the pests.Taz the kelpie x was at another line in and around the cover. We traveled on for a few minutes and while watching the surrounding hills sonic slipped away.I mentioned to kev that sonic was missing and he thought he wont have gone too far.I said to him wait for the scream of the goats in jest and I hadnt the words out of my mouth and a long way off we could hear a goat in distress and we both knew what it was,oul sonic hunted them up and pursued them far into the woods and had taken one into custody.I took off as fast as an overweight 50 year olds legs could carry him and after a few gallops i duly fell feet first into a drain and up to my knees in shity water.freezing wasnt the word, but like a true hunter determined to get to the quarry I pulled myself out and continued the ''charge''.kev at this point was 50 yards ahead of me and the dog was now visible swinging about on a small enough billy,he certainly wasnt having it his own way and was being thrown about like a rag doll but he never lost his grip on the back of the head/neck area.Kev was in like a good un and out with the knife once he reached the 2 and put an end to the battle.I was delighted with the dog,he sure used his nose and when found the quarry took care of the job at hand till we arrived.I never had to waste a bullet in the gun and after a drag back we headed for home nice and early,.....much to the dismay of the mrs,she thought she was rid of us for the day.Plenty of grub for the mutts and another outing is due on the cards in the next day or so and hopefully we can do it all over again.since sonic has been on the foxes the last season hes really become confident in his work and cant wait to get the pup of his into the team, but thats a long way off yet. 12 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
Great write up Liam. It sounds a lot like the areas where I go hiking. I stalked up very close to a mob of 15 to 20 not long ago, with the two dogs with me. They were keen enough but the old bitch only wants to herd and snap and the pup's way too young to risk with them at the moment. Fair play to Sonic, them big old billies can give out a right battering. . I reckon I could nearly track them myself though with the smell off them.
