No Digging & No Dogs Can It Be Done?

Recommended Posts

Afternoon chaps.

Not a ferriter by any means but I have recently submitted an application for vermin control on a military base.

In the rules it says that shooting and Ferriting is allowed but no digging or dogs.

Would / could you do it knowing that you are not allowed to dig?

As I said I have no experience with ferrets just interested to know.

Cheers

Danny

Well ferreting without a dog is no problem of course,,, if the ferret does lay up,, there are ways of getting it out,,, the first and most common is gutting a rabbit,,,leave the guts still attached to

Done thousands of acres of MOD ground throughout the UK,...even lamped around Catterick,...   The no digging rule is stupid.....look at all the damage and digging, the fecking rabbits have already

if its catterick or surrounding army land its shit, too many rules and paperwork, and loads already doing it

Well ferreting without a dog is no problem of course,,, if the ferret does lay up,, there are ways of getting it out,,, the first and most common is gutting a rabbit,,,leave the guts still attached to the rabbits insides,,, put it in the hole nearest to where you might think the ferret is underground,,, you may of heard bumping near a hole,,, if it's windy put it in a hole where there might be an air currant taking the smell below,,,,, I quite often blow the rising steam and smell from the guts down a hole,,, and I will make the clicking sound I make when I'm feeding them at home... Oh forgot to add,,,either keep hold of the gutted rabbit,,, or put it in a purse net if you have to leave the hole,,, so the ferret don't drag the bunny below ground

Now failing all this,,, it will be handy to carry some live capture mink type traps, in your motor,,if you do have to leave your ferrets overnight,,, make sure you set them near to warren or even with the entrances in the hole,,,,make sure you cover them from the weather,,,

My opinion if no digging Is allowed then personally I wouldn't do it reason being if the ferret kills in you could be in for a long wait

But it's up to you mate

If it's a proper pesting job ,,, and there's money involved,,, then not doing the job might not be an option,,,, I know I certainly would do it,,,,,,

Mind I would proberbly turn it down if it was just for sport,,, as the mod,, should be paying for that kind of work

As said it can be done loads of gear and loads of ferrets if a ferret goes missing you just carry on keeping a eye on that burrow often when it goes quiet the rabbit moves ferret shows . Theres other ways to get the ferret out with out digging but it depends on what the burrow is like . Find it hard to believe they want the rabbits controlled and no digging is allowed as if you dont dig them out how do you know there dead ?.

I've done paid jobs on similar type ground where you cannot dig..even if you were allowed to, you would'nt be able to dig through concrete etc etc..

That's when them little Jills come in handy...oooops I nearly mentioned Micros then... hehehee

Like I said I'm not a ferriter and not getting paid for it. It's just the shooting that I will be doing. The fact I live on the base makes it ideal.

It was purely an interest thing. If it could be done I wouldn't mind inviting somebody on and I'll lend a hand.
