bullmastiff 615
Suppose Your after a dog for a specific quarry, how would you go about finding a well bred pup? When people usually ask on here about which breed etc. a lot of people say 'Pick a Lurcher to Lurcher breeding where both parents are doing what you want' So... How do you find the dogs that are actually doing the job you want them for? Not a lot of people would be willing to talk on the internet about their dogs achievements (for obvious reasons) and asking to see the parents work is also I'd guess a no-no... 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
One of the big ingredients is time mate. I was looking for a pup last year, I put the feelers out among folk I know and on here.... And waited. I had some great offers, followed them up and some weren't for me, some were but it didn't work out with pup numbers etc. eventually it came together and I got what I wanted. I think it does help if you're already in the game, and know folk in it and have a decent rep. 3 Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I've just bought another pup lurcher myself and I always do like Ideation says, put the word about and be prepared to travel and say no if its not what you like or want, even then it can be a lottery as to how it turns out,I've just gave a 6 month old pup back to the breeder as it wasn't going to be what I needed,it can be a game of chance but buying from 2 good workers can limit the outcome,,WM 2 Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
It's alright saying get out and see em, I've not got a lurcher and have asked a few times around different places to see various crosses work, eg collie cross/ beddy cross etc but you wont get no one that would take someone unknown out I have some land of my own that I shoot but you also hear stories off lads about not taking lads out on your lads case they come back without ya. Unless you known a few people etc already in the game it can be a challenge, Can see why so many people go to hancock etc 1 Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
Time is one thing I do have, The Landlord here only allows us to have two dogs at the property and Tia is still pottering on so I've still got plenty of time to look. Distance won't ever be a problem either, I usually just throw the family in the car and go camping in the area for the weekend! It's finding the right planned breeding in the first place that I'm struggling with!! It doesn't help that I haven't really got a specific cross in mind, It's more the 'type' I'm after. Almost all my friends are into shooting of one form or another not Lurcher work, so I have very few contacts to tap up for info. Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
What do you want the dog to do in an ideal world ? Personally I'd like a dog for rabbiting but possibly around 25" mark so IF the ban were even revoked I would have the POSSIBILITY to hunt other legal quarry without having to get a different dog in. Thats just me though. I have spoken to a bloke who has bred beddy crosses for generations at a show and he is breeding in whippet sized ones to bring size to around 22"-24", he also says if anything ever changes he'll just start breeding bigger dogs back into his line. His is a long term view tho where as mine is the 1 dog view. Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
I would say to you lads that have no real lurcher experience to buy yourself a dog with threequarter sighthound blood; greyhound or whippet and a quarter of the type you like ; either beddy or collie, they will always have the speed to catch what you want, once you have a lurcher you will meet like minded people and gather more experience quickly, get yourself out around a few shows and have a look at what types you like and ask whats in them, good luck, WM from; beddy or collie Edited January 21, 2014 by wirral countryman 2 Quote Link to post
stabba 10,745
If the dog you need is what i think it is..then no one in their right mind will show you them at work...feelers out and question lads that you think might be in the game...Though not many will admit it on here but if you follow posts closely you'll have a good idea of who should be speaking to. 6 Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,222
If you haven't seen what you want in the classified in the amount of time you've been on here, then there isn't a Lurcher that you want. After all well bred or not, it's gamble and a lot of the results will be down to you. Saying that you will have to know what you're looking for. Good things come to those who wait. Quote Link to post

There's tons of dogs on the net that sound nice and look lovely but how do you find out if they actually work the parents? and also work them on what your after? If your after a Ferreting/lamping dog, theirs a lot of good litters to choose from. Quote Link to post
