Few seasons back, I was out with the gos & put up a woodcock......the gos refused it :-(, as I watched the woodcock twist & turn into the woods, a spar came out & nailed it!

Also had one fly into my kitchen while I was cooking, last summer....:-) they are the greatest!

A few years ago I was out at the side of my house mending my car, there were loads of starlings and sparrows feeding on something on the ivy on the side of my house, all of a sudden from nowhere, bang a spar crashes into the ivy and nails a sparrow, about 5 yards from me, great to see, I love them, if only they were big enough for rabbits, come to think of it I wonder what a spar cross Harris would be like :hmm:

flew them as a kid and to be fair you cannot get a better attacking bird, easy to find quarry for and always an amazing performance, seen loads hunting wild when out with other hawks , seen them slam pigeons out the air from ambush to outright dog fights with blackies around hawthorns, shame they so hard to keep for the average hawker, size means nothing to the sparrowhawk, proper little warriors

i had one take a teal rising off a pond, then spent two seasons using a musket then a female trying to catch a snipe, i thought the muskets agility would be the better option but after a season it became clear the the greater wingspan of the female was the way to go in the hope she could out-rise one, never did manage it, something i might come back to in the future as i don't like failure :laugh:

Working on site years ago we had a blackies nest in a stack of pallets .Watched as they grew and eventually fledged.Having lunch one day and watching the parents feeding in a hedge when a spar comes over our head to plough into the hedge taking a fledgling .Not content he takes another on the deck the other side with the other foot .Showcased the drive and ability of these birds that were feeding young of their own nearby .Up at Gatwick airport a few years ago a spar had had a woodcock in the car park ,ground floor ,undercover .It was far from dead but the amount of feathers flying said to me it wouldnt be long .
