gnasher16 30,280
This should probably be in the Wildlife section but thought i might get a better response here as its bird related......i had a bit of a creepy experience earlier that i was wondering if any of you bird folk could throw some light on.... You know how in your own garden you get an eye for whats normal and whats not.....well ive got some big old trees at the back of my house and this morning when i looked up i could see something in a tree about halfway up that just didnt look right so upon investigation i discovered it to be a Heron !!......creeping up to it as quietly as possible it dawned on me that it wasnt moving at all .......being petrified of heights i was tempted to just leave it and pretend i never saw it but it kept f****n with my conscience so went and got a ladder and 5 minutes later im dodging about up a tree... and its still not moving !......im now 20 feet away and can see its chest moving so its definately alive but it was almost as though it was rooted to the spot staring into space........not really knowing what to do or how the law stands i thought bollocks to it and risked life and limb getting it down....its now in my arms and still not moving an inch and felt rigid in its body.....back down on the ground i now put it on the floor and i shit you not....the thing gradually came back to life ......slightly unsteady it took a few steps away from me before flying off out of eyesight.................now please please can someone tell me what the f**k all that might of been about ?.....some sort of seizure is all i can put it down to ? Malt 379
You got a fish pond in your garden mate? Dont know but maybe it froze out of some kind of defence reflex? I've seen them remain still as anything in trees for ages but they usually feck off if you get too close to them. Maybe it was digesting a gut full of some poor b*****ds fish and was too stuffed to move..
Bosun11 537
No idea what the initial problem would be Gnash but wondering that maybe a bit of your body heat may have brought it round enough to make a move and fly. Good deed to have done (though folk with fish ponds may think different!) and a good tale to tell in the future. Nice one for sharing.

fireman 10,947
Maybe it was just in a deep sleep or cold and damp and likes been said your body heat just gave it that boost type thing,i remember finding one once well the dogs found it but it was keeping them at bay with it's beak. This one had hit a power line and had a broken wing,i took it to a wildlife rescue place and it was hard work carrying that back with it trying to take my eyes out and the dogs still wanting to play "pull apart" with it,it made good and was released a couple of months later or so they told me. Good man for trying to do something with Gnasher. Edited January 21, 2014 by fireman
YOKEL 2,288
still got a scar on my lip to this day from attempting to help a heron many moons ago, was out with a mate walking the dogs across farmland n the arsehole of nowhere, and i see a heron all hunched up in the middle of a plowed field. approached it all quite like while my mate held onto the dogs, it was calm as f**k as i lifted it into my arms, and you could see it had taken a knock somewhere along the line, "don't worry little fella" i said as i nestled it all caring like...then the f****r spun round and striped me up with it's b*****d great beak!!! dropped kicked the c**t back into the field and let the dogs off... yokel
socks 32,253
I would guess at being stunned after hitting something and making it into the tree ... Were its pupils really wide ? ... The whole act of taking it out of the tree and setting it out in the open brought it round ... I found an injured one as a kid and tried to nurse it back to health but it died a few days later .... One of the very few things a ferret won't eat ........

socks 32,253
There is a belief in pagan mythology that the heron can take your soul and rape your innermost thoughts ... You should never touch a heron as once you have that link can never be broken ... Happy dreams tonight mate ..........
YOKEL 2,288
Ha ha, if it took my soul he'd throw it right back at me. And if he went anywhere near my innermost thoughts, I recon he'd drop down dead with shock!
