Holly f**k skycat, you gave me stress yesterday over the vet swipe but Jesus lumping f*****g Joseph, how to walk a dog on a lead!!!! Seriously!!!!! desertbred 5,490 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Share Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) With the salukis when you shampoo the feathering on the ears leave them for a while wet before you blow dry them the extra weight on the ears simulates the pull on a collar and lead so they soon get used to it , be careful though only use a good quality shampoo though as if you use cheap stuff, it can scar the featheries for life and put them off walking on a lead. There are many people who come on here who've never had a dog before, or maybe never had a running dog: or, people who get a lurcher after having been brought up with more 'pedestrian' breeds, those which fit in immediately into a human environment and are born submissive and willing to please ... there's no comparison between a steady little pony and a top flight racehorse: same goes for dogs. People who reply with stupid remarks like 'kick it' should be ashamed of themselves, even if they are joking, though I dare say they aren't the sort who would ever admit to having a problem with their own dogs. Only the weak make fun of the less knowledgeable or less competent. The whole idea of having a forum, IMO, is to share experiences and help those who want to learn. Sure there's a place for jokes, but if someone asks a genuine question why shoot them down in flames? We all have to start somewhere! I understand people having specific issues and asking on a web site, but basic things like feeding, diet, lead training and first step obedience should be something that is understood before even contemplating getting a dog. just my opinion. 2 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I think it's a lot to do with the fact that most kids these days are very far removed from animals in the first place. Even if mum and dad had a pet dog chances are they fed it on tinned food and hardly walked it. So they go ahead and get a lurcher or working bred terrier, and find out it ain't as easy as they thought. Why not mate ?Is this not a site for beginners and experienced dog men ,everyone starts somewhere They do need to start somewhere mate but any newcomer into lurchers should have a basic understanding of dogs. You don't wake up one morning and decide you want drive a bus when you can't even drive. Same applies to hunting with dogs IMO. The pounds are full of lurchers, they can't all be bad but I'd guarantee most of them have been wasted. Anyone new to this sport should have a basic understanding of dogs and it don't get more basic than teaching a pup to walk on a lead. I know you get skittish dogs and I know salukis can be like that but the guy with the lead problem I'd say is more down to not having a bond with the dog than anything. I've always had boisterous dogs because I give them heaps of praise, have a carry on with them, make them feel good around me. My mate had a skittering dog but he shouts a lot. Not at the dog but in the house and around it and he wonders why the dog doesn't want to be attached to him by a lead. As soon as my dogs see the lead or see you going near one its cartwheels, probably like most of your dogs. They know it means fun. But as I said, if your new to this game, give the rescue kennels and us lurcherman who get a bad name a break, learn the basics of dog training at least. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
