skycat 6,173 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Share Posted January 21, 2014 Put collar and lead on pup in back garden/yard: somewhere she feels happy and safe. Don't try and lead her around, just let her wander about with lead dangling. Call her to you: hand feed her titbits. Once she's OK with the lead trailing, take hold of the lead; just stand there, feed more titbits. Take one step away, crouch and call pup to you for more rewards. Go to end of lead again, crouch, call her etc. Very soon she'll realise that staying with you on lead means treats and rewards. Do this several times a day, before you feed her so she's hungry when you do it. Then try leading for a few steps outside. Depending on age of pup, many are frightened of leaving their home where they feel safe, so you need to repeat the same process outside your home: just a few steps at first, then a bit further every day. You don't say how old the pup is either. The passive resistance thing (when she lies down and won't move) is typical of a pup that hates being restrained in any way and a lot of Saluki types are like that: they want to be their own boss right from the start, so you need to go slowly and carefully while the pup adjusts to the fact that it can't always go where IT wants. You need a lot of patience with this sort of pup, and then some more patience. Don't expect it to be like a terrier or collie pup that wants to be with you and follow you everywhere. Saluki types are mightily independent and some take quite a while to accept being led in any way at all. Just be sure to make every experience on the lead a pleasurable one, not a form of punishment: getting the pup attached to a furry toy also helps: and I've lead trained many pups who were quite happy to follow me tugging on a fluffy toy, quite unaware that they were being led: little by little they get used to the idea. 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

She wasn't screaming at first but as soon as she felt she was being "led" in a certain direction, she resisted. And it's a gun dog slip lead I have her on so as she pulled back it tightened round her neck. She then flew into a blind panic and screamed like a banshee. I had a collar on her from day one, but the only thing that helped is putting a lead on her round the house and garden, then up and down the road, then to the field where I took her lead off, and then back from the field. Slowly but surely built up. Now I only have it on her when were near roads and stuff but that's only because she's a pup. And still trying to chase anything that moves, including cars haha! Teaching the dog to retrieve, run the beam, jump..... It's a f***ing mind field, honest, good job you have here though mate.
