Evolution Of The Lurcher

Recommended Posts

Lurchers these days seem to have become more like fashion items, certain crosses attract certain people and that isnt always a good thing. Best working dog i saw didnt look like what most peoples idea of a lurcher should look like, it was a mongrelly looking cur with obvious collie traits, but it could do the job that was required of it, it often dissapeared on its own and would return with game of some description. As said if you want a dog look at the quarry your hunting, type of ground your hunting do a bit of research and make your decision. ATB KIC.

maybe the key to continuing working lurchers in the future with current laws and restrictions is to go back to the original types of the past,if your out with a lurcher its easily identified where as a few of the collie types, say birds bryn for example look quite none descript to the un trained eye therefore attracting far less attention, just a thought

Thanks for all the comments. This is what I mean Hunter... What constitutes an old fashioned lurcher and why don't they look like that now?

because until recently they didn't need to.................. they have been bred for attributes not camouflage

I've never believed there is any such thing as the 'traditional' lurcher. If you went back far enough, greyhounds were lurchers and lurchers were greyhounds. One type was refined to hunt and course as a sport, the other simply was used for necessity.

Old forrest laws brought on big changes for the 'necessity' hound and it was crossed with various other breeds to create a dog to hunt whatever a man needed to hunt on this fair isle. When new blood was required they went for those coursing dogs again and put them to whatever was required, just like now and thats where our lurcher ideals come from.

True, the fabled Smithfield/Greyhound is the lurcher of legend but it was only one type. I do believe that the lurcher was 'created' different in different parts of the country to suit the availability of breeds, the land, the laws and the quarry, no different than today!

Question, is the Lurcher the dog of the poacher or the gypsy..?
