Fac Help

It depends entirely on your circumstances, your background, any previous convictions or police involvement and ultimately having a very sound "good reason" for wanting a pistol,

They are without doubt the most difficult thing to acquire on an FAC and they will be looking very closely at your reasoning. I dare say you'll need to demonstrate a regular use for the pistol over say a long barreled .410. I know one or two terrier men who work for their Hunt kennels have shot pistols for their work and their justification for needing them is the position they hold within the hunt.

Every application is taken on it's own merits and you have nothing to lose by applying but to give you a comparison, a S.1 Firearm can be administered and granted solely by local Chief Constables or their representatives, the authority to possess a S.5 Firearm which a pistol comes under is an authority albeit delegated from the Home Secretary. That's how much scrutiny they will have to overcome in order to grant it.

Not impossible, there are legal reasons for having them, but very difficult.

Aye. The guys on the hunt yard near me (my missus works there as a groom) are S.5 firearms holders and the conditions on their certs actually read something along the lines that a pistol may only be held whilst in employment of the hunt yard and if employment is terminated, as is the license. Its all legislation to do with being obvious when you are carrying a weapon. Its the same reason weapons must have a certain barrel and overall length. Its to prevent concealment. A pistol is easily concealed, making a bank heist more easy.

I applied for a .32 for humane despatch of deer on a farm some years ago, landowner sent a letter in with the need to do animal husbandry on sick/injured deer etc. The farm is in Wales and I was in Yorkshire but got it.

On renewal I applied for it varifying for humane despatch of fox - REFUSED (no good reason) {west yorks}

Moved to Wales and applied again on my renewal - REFUSED again (no good reason) {dyfed/powys}

Just tried again on renewal & was refused again, got in touch with BASC and he pointed out the new home office guidelines which basically said - once aquired you don't need good reason to use on other animals as long as its of size to do the job. I went above firearms and got the CPO involved telling them all the info and just had it sent today stating "The .32 2 shot pistol shall be used only in connection with HUMANE DESPATCH OF ANIMALS".

I am one of the terriermen for a hunt but never put this in any letter or discussed it with the FAO, I went down the lines of protecting game/wild birds instead and threw a lot in about safety of myself and others (they were wanting me to use shotgun/rifle at close range whether the fox was in a stop end, trap, snare or net).

And yes get in touch with Alan Booth (BASC) he'll point you in the right direction.

Best of luck :thumbs:
