whats best terrier or spaniel

whats best for bushing terrier or spaniel

would like to know as im after a dog/bitch

I recomend a cross between the two, i recently bred some bushing crossbreds. 1/2 cocker spaniel (large working type), 1/4 russell, 1/4 patterdale. excellent for fox drives, finding and flushing all quarry

Personally... terriers for me. We've used our Borders in the beating line quite a lot and they've gone into cover the spaniels wouldn't go in. So long as your recall is spot on a terrier will do you fine.

 

Currently got a terrier spaniel cross. Mother is a Jack Russell cross Springer and father is a Border Terrier cross springer. She's about 14 months, and isn't as keen on going into cover like our young Border who is the same age. Ratting though, she did us proud on our recent trip to Lincs, even retrieving rats to us. A bonny little dog, a pleasure to have in the house and to handle, but for her age and what we're used to with our Borders, still very much a puppy!

Treading carefully here or perhaps not -no feck it ,lets go for it -----------Terriers of the sort kept by digging lads are a pain to walk off lead anywhere and the thought of bushing more than one in thick cover makes me cringe .The reason being _Holes and the chance of more than one terrier to ground .If you train the terriers to stay out of holes ,quite easy with some , then I suppose a pack of borders or plummers would do . Far better to use a purpose bred dog for the biz and that is the springer spaniel with the added bonus that its not going to fire into your lurcher for catching his kill.

spaniel every time but needs to be trained in the basics or waste of time .cockers are great and pound for pound i think they work harder than springers but they can be little twats to train .my cockers are fantastic and will do owt for me cos they want to whereas my springer does it cos he has to as chief said a bit more of a robot.good luck mate

I keep spaniels and terriers and for bushing the spaniels are tops !

 

1:spaniels are methodical at there hunting and cover every inch of ground.

 

2:a decent spaniel will go through any cover gorse,blackthorn you name it it will go through.

 

3 they will flush and drop to shot

 

4: any earth in dense cover my terriers will drop in( and two terriers dropping in one earth aint my cup of tea!) the spaniels try but dont quite fit

 

5:i wouldnt want my terriers opening up chasing as it tends to bugger all the game off further on the gorse banks.

 

6:i have said this before if its just a bushing terrier fine if you dig with it aswell it aint funny digging 5 foot to a terrier on a rabbit when your out foxing !

 

i bush huge gorse banks and the spaniels have the edge and can be controlled on the whistle stop,stay,left,right,back and recall where as the terriers are 9 times out of ten in destroy mode and very deaf !

my spaniels would still take fox and kill it (if it was legal) but bring a bunny out alive and un damaged (i eat my rabbits).

 

anyone else (used) a spaniel as a draw dog?

 

hope it helps a wee bit fella, english springers i have, old type stocky and built to last bushing all day.gorsty gus is a good line or flintmountain strain.

 

and for the two lads out with the lurchers last sat take your rabbits home you tossers dont leave them piled under a hedge (although cheers for the free dog food )

Springers are a 'boil in the bag' type of dog! with minimal training you'll have an adequate dog to work with, more training you put in, the better they get. Cockers on the other hand seems to take a lot more training to get them to an acceptable level to work but in the right hands they can be outstanding little workers (what some people call 'character' others call 'headstrong'!!!).
