the patman 4
have you thought about getting a spaniel cross patterdale a mate of mine has one its 11 months old and is doing everything thats asked of her she has a very good nose and works all the time at the moment its working along side a couple of lurchers Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Not looking to disrespect your opinion Chief, but I'm interested to her why you consider terriers to be a pain out bushing. I only ask as I've used terriers for years and wouldn't be without them: they more than double my bag out on a mooch or when working cover of any sorts, plus I take them beating on shoots: they find as good as any Spaniels, especially runners that have hidden deep in cover. And now I've got one that retrieves anything she can carry or drag over any distance! Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
If you just want the dog to bush stuff out for the lurchers to chase, then whatever dog you decide on will have to be well trained enough to flush and then leave without joining in on the action. A spaniel would be the traditional choice for this task, springers love to please and are usually fairly straightforward to train. Terriers can be a pain as Chief says, they usually want in on the action and they can be a nuisance if they dont pay heed to your commands and end up harrassing the lurchers when they make a catch. They need to be well trained and preferably no good for earth work, or even too big, as the last thing you want when you are bushing for rabbits and hares, is a fiesty terrier taking off into some cover and then going to ground possibly without a collar on If your not too bothered about all that, and dont mind if the busher joins in the chase or the kill, then any breed of dog will do really, most dogs will bush, terriers, collies, spaniels, staffs, crossbreeds etc. Good luck whatever you decide, I have 2 border terriers and a collie/grey/bull (the one in my avatar) and they are all used for bushing but they all like to catch as well, and the bull x is quite good at flushing rabbits out and nailing them, she loves ratting too. Good luck Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
I have pushed out rabbits from cover a springer took minutes getting into , yet my terriers were in and on the rabbits quicker. Terriers for me to face deep cover any time Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
I have used my terriers for bushing but its not a favourite pastime as I always worry about them disapearing. Personally i'd go with a spaniel, you don't have the added "problem" of them disapearing into an unknown earth and I believe they would be easier in general to call of a rabbit for the lurchers, not so easy with terriers. elisderyn 496
Spaniel everytime for me , I have seen some excellent terriers work cover but there is always the problem of it disappearing which , if you dont want it , is a big problem especially if he gets into a tight place after a rabbit a situation that eventually is going to end in disaster.......I work with a fella who loved bushing with his terriers but over the yrs he was into it he lost 2 to ground , 1 at a rabbit & another to a fox ........ Chief - N has got himself a cracking little cocker bitch pup there now for some bushing & rough shooting........She certainly going to be a challenge.... Quote Link to post
TonyT2 0
you just cant beat a terrier. they work with as much drive as any spaniel..............but...........as others have said..........they might close their ears..........might not come straight back whe called .................might drop in. They arent gun dogs ..............but dont we love em!!!!!!!!!!!!! T Quote Link to post
alimac 882
terriers every time... 1.. terrier will face thicker cover with out question 2.. terrier is more inclined to flush and chace(put presure on) the quarry, making a flush to the gun / dog more likely 3.. terriers more likely to open up and let you know there on 4.. should be no harder to get terriers to recall, they WILL do it as well as a spanial if trained properly 5.. who cares , each to there own Quote Link to post
tyson 1
whats best kind of spaniel , springer , cocker or a hybrid Quote Link to post
COMPO 54
whats best kind of spaniel , springer , cocker or a hybrid I have a cocker spaniel and also a teckel x...personally for what you want i would say a small hound cross There is this thread debating hound crosses and spaniel crosses http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=26521 I have found my cocker works completely different to springers i have seen, springers tend to flail through all cover regardless, the cocker has a very good nose and will flail about but only if there is something worth flailing about for you could say she is a bit more selective but is useful never the less i would reckon a beagle, teckel, bassett or a hybrid of one of these would suit you. There was a litter of basset hound cross springer near me a few months ago. Quote Link to post
