But, and its a big but, neither are let off the lead when out, even along the canal where they could have a good gallup, because both owners are afraid they will chase something or run away. IMO it's fine to have a lurcher as a pet but the owner has a responsibility to train the dog so it can be trusted off the lead, any dog but especially a running dog that can't run can't have a full life. As I said both owners walk the dogs on a lead for miles each day, certainly further than mine get free running, so they seem sure the dog is happy, but I doubt it. 1 Quote Link to post

As I said both owners walk the dogs on a lead for miles each day, certainly further than mine get free running, so they seem sure the dog is happy, but I doubt it. it does seem a shame mate, was out the other day with dogs and woman had a young springer on 1 of them cord handle things, it was really trying to play with my pup. but it couldn't really move that far from the owner, was shame it would had great time playing with my pup ,both would have burned up lot of energy and that's what this springer needs I think . beast 1,884 Posted January 18, 2014 Report Share Posted January 18, 2014 a good pet home os better than a poor working home, as folks have said. a lot of pet lurcher owners dot mind if their dogs have a bit of a run at the odd rabbit or squirrel anyway. a pup will easily fit into a pet lifestyle, especially if there are kids to mess about with! the only concern i would have is putting an adult worker into a pet home. i have known a couple of dogs which were placed in pet homes after a few seasons of work which didnt work out, one used to jump out of the garden and jump all over the neighbours garadens hunting and killing cats, often ended up in the road and all sorts.the other was just permanently restless, pacing and whining and ended up very destructive. they were good owners and really tried to keep the dogs interested in life but i think it can be very difficult for a really driven dog to replace the thrill of hunting Quote Link to post

fox digger 1,086 Posted January 18, 2014 Report Share Posted January 18, 2014 i wouldnt think twice about it jigsaw. if i bred a litter and had surplus id love to be able to say i knew i got the spare pups good homes where they will be well looked after forever.... golden retrievers and labs were originally bred for a job in the field, look how well they adapt and the affection they give to there owners when used as guide dogs..... they never saw ducks, pheasants, or any other wild life and i bet they aren't pining away to get out and do what they were originally bred for, beagles and springers are the same at airport security checks, they are all little bundles of vigour and very contented to sniff for paraphernalia in peoples underwear rather than fox or wild fowl!! a dog that is reared in a different enviroment than what it has been specifically bred for adapts to that enviroment and i bet it will be as content being fed the best of grub, warm dry bed and chasing a tennis ball as its siblings are chasing bunnies and running the big land...... no brainer in my eyes jigsaw, give her the number to the numpty that is trying to swap the mature dog for your pup and get her to take that poor misfortunate animal aswell as ive a feeling its not going to have a very happy future with its present owner!!! But at the same time, I've seen some pet homes come unstuck, when dealing with a well bred, driven animal. . . . which has led to problems in the home and a breakdown of the home for the dog. . . . and ultimately it's been classed as a wrong un. . . . . . . . But the key I guess is 'GOOD' pet home. One that gets the score with the dog etc. However, I very much get what you are saying about the waste mate. . . . . I have seen some stunning running dogs, that never get to really run, never get to chase. . . . and sometimes you do think they are living a bit of a half life. . . . . and if you have bred it, I can see how that would be a consideration. On the other hand. . . .. it's less likely to come a cropper out in the field etc, so will be there if all is lost, and you need the blood maybe? 1 Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738 Posted January 18, 2014 Report Share Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) In my opinion,....certain types of dog ,.working Sheepdogs, Cattle Dogs,.and perhaps a few exceptionaly driven,.'Battle dogs',...realy do need to have an outlet for their selectively bred urges,..but,.the average running dog composite,.is a wee bit like a cheetah or a lion,.or in fact most other types of predator, inasmuch as it only hunts,.. when it needs to,.and spends most of its life sitting on its arse,.chilling man.. Lurchers make good pets,...all of mine are.... But,.instead of anyone worrying about finding good homes for their jukels, perhaps think deeply if these homes are available in the first fecking place, before breeding a litter of pups... jigsaw 11,875 Posted January 18, 2014 Author Report Share Posted January 18, 2014 well the deed is done,met the lady and her husband and her 3 children,all full of enthusiasm and excitement.I felt likr fekin father christmas bringing their toys and gifts I was brought in and introduced to the family and after an hour long session of feeling eachother out(NO,NOT PHYSICALLY)and sizing each other up i let them pick the pup they desired and it will have a tremendous life with them.I requested If I could call back over time and see how the pup developes,and maybe meet up for a walk,so im very happy that I did the right thing. 10 Quote Link to post

Better than somebody rocking up on their BMX... boasting about how much of a good dog man they are... how their dogs are the bawz.... paying their money and leaving for dust.... advertising their bull x for sale while doing 'no hander' on the way home ...
