beast 1,884
as we all know there has been an alarming spate of dog thefts in recent weeks, and it is frankly worrying. mine are only cur dogs, not as desirable as some types, but i fear that the wrong person sniffing around might be tempted if it semed like "easy money". and i would be broken if mine went. two questions: 1 how to prevent thefts 2 how to get dogs back 1 if someone wants to nick something enough, then they will find a way. the thing is, the harder we make it then the less chance there is of it happening. no dog is 100% safe, but do your best to make it difficult as you can. strongest pen/kennel you can afford, GOOD padlocks, security lights, motion sensor alarms, cameras (even dummy cameras) loads of kit available depending what you can afford. tell all your neighbours that there are thieves operating in the area (they will worry more about this and be more observant than if you just say dog-thieves), guard dogs if it is appropriate, keep dogs in the house if possible. you have a good chance of making it too hard for them to bother BUT 2 if they do get your dogs? i know we can make sure dogs are chipped, alert every dog rescue centre and kennel in the country (and keep reminding them weekly), put posters up EVERYWHERE, and all the rest. this will help get the dogs back to you IF THEY ARE FOUND, but this for me is the problem, HOW DO WE FIND THEM? and even if we do, how do we persuade the thieves to give them back? i'm not sure we all have the contacts, the physical abilities or to be honest the balls to "go vigilante" but that is sometimes the only language these c##ts understand. also if they dont get any comebacks, we are leaving the door open for them to carry on their bad ways. any comments/ideas/suggestions lads and lasses? oddser 79
best way to keep your dogs is don't let anybody see your dogs run don't brag em off keep yourself to yourself they only steal em when they know about them 15 Quote Link to post
Dead Eyes 681
There have to be better ways. I know the odd worker gets took too, but isn't it always seemingly the coursers? Ive been thinking about this non-stop for days and there are realistic solutions, but people would have to pay a little more money for their dogs as pups to make it happen. If people genuinely stuck together though, this could work I'm sure. I'll formulate it better and put a post up as soon as I've made a coherent plan Quote Link to post

Also to be considered is wiring the locks direct too the mains I reckon watch dog, a dog that would bark+yap and let you know, same as a alarm would, make a noise. the best would be couple of jacks , or a gsd or bel mal, these 3 breeds are very vocal , 2 bigger and more intimidating if you wanted that. but 2 jacks would let you know if somebody was about 20yds before they got on your property, and security lights. if the jacks are we locked in with real good locks and tight mesh on bars of run, who ever trying to feck about there will ,1st be well have full security lights on them, 2nd and enough barking to wake the dead,as couldn't get to the jacks right away with mesh there, nobody in the right mind would want to hang about with all that noise going on. I spoke to cid once as there were doing housed by me were I lived, and they said if you were going to use a dog to stop thief's a loud terrier jack etc that's locked away +lights will stop most, the only thing that would stop them is a gun, and if that's the case nothing will stop that, but this set up would stop your average scum , and I thnk he was right what he said 1 Quote Link to post

Sensor lights, good locks, cctv, are obvious deterents. Current photos of your dogs in case the worst happens, and you can then put them up on forums. Dont go on sites such as this, and Face book, bigging ,your dogs up , telling people where you live ,and unbelievably in one case, when you will be out. 1 Quote Link to post
