My bushing dog, a sprocker bitch,is getting on a bit and I'm now in a position to be able to breed and keep a pup from her. She has served me well both bushing rabbits to my lurchers but is also a very keen and practiced ratter. Although she does well I am looking to explore what a different breed may add. I have very little experience working with other bushing types, yet I have seen them work. The options I currently have are a beagle, a jrt and of course another spaniel. Options being that I am aware of suitable sires of this breeding in my area. I understand each different types bushing/hunting styles but am interested to find out what a beagle or terrier could add. Any advice, knowledge or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Any pics would also be great to see. This will be my last chance to breed my bitch and I'll be working with the pup for years to come so I'm looking to make the most educated decision possible. Cheers, freddie. Quote Link to post

Ive never seen a spaniel/terrier cross but ive always thought it would be a good cross if the right types were used. You would need to know what was behind the terrier breeding of course, you wouldnt want any suprises there. You already know the spaniel is pure so its only the terrier you would have to think about. If you could get a terrier from a close bred strain you would also get the hybrid vigour of the 1st cross in the pups.You could end up with pure hunting machine..or am i getting carried away? night hawk 13 2 Posted January 21, 2014 Report Share Posted January 21, 2014 hi mate i lately got offered a cockerxrussell twelve month old bitch for free she is smooth coated like the russell black and white and slightly built.I took her home showed her a few bunnies and shes turning out to be a little belter Fly through any cover very nimble and gives great tongue.Never under your feet all action all the time maybe i got lucky but on this experiance id say a good hunting russell maybe. 1 Quote Link to post

I'm tempted to play it safe and stick to what I know and put a spaniel over her. However I still like the idea of the terrier attributes. She's quite small so I don't think a lab would be an option, unless I managed to find a lab spaniel x that would be suitable. Again thanks for the replies lads, still plenty of thinking to do.
