Hi Ho.. A Foxing We Will Go

Recommended Posts

Saw several foxes on a permission the other night. All well out of range though for my trusty .410.

A girl who works on the farm called me this morning to say a fox had killed 5 ducks right in front of her in broad daylight and no amount of throwing things at it or shooing it off made any difference. Cheeky b*****d's going to get it tonight. (The fox, not the girl.)

I spent a few hours down there on Wednesday night, but when we saw the fox that was the likely culprit, it was standing in front of the house so no safe shot.

I decided a shotgun was a better tool for the job, so I spent 2 hours last night hiding behind a shed, waiting for it to turn up again. Just got wet and miserable instead.

The girl from the farm called again today to say the fox had taken 2 more ducks in this morning.

I got there at 9 tonight. At least it wasn't raining for once, but there was a bright moon and not a puff of wind. To make matters worse, my lighter packed up, so I had to go back to the van for a light. I got back to my hiding place about 10 and was wondering if it would ever turn up.

In the distance I could hear a fox "yip-yipping" but the next call was definitely nearer, or was it? I did one of my special squeaks on the back of my hand, which sounds more like a raspberry than a fox, but then it yipped again and it was a lot closer. It must have been running down the lane because next minute it came though the hedge about 70 yards from me, runnng straight towards me.

When it was about 40 yards away, and still running towards me, I brought the gun up. I could see it clearly in the moonlight and I pulled the trigger. 42g of 1's stopped it dead in it's tracks.

Anyway, sorry for waffling. It was a big, smelly dog fox. At least the ducks are safe for a bit.
