Back To The Trees!

Recommended Posts

I decided to go roost shooting this evening and got down a bit late. Due to recent storms there were loads of branches down, so my approach sounded like an elephant in ballet slippers tap dancing on matchsticks!

Flock to flight! Oh Flock!

Waited and a lone pigeon swooped into a high roost, I could not get a line on it, so had to come out of cover and into the open. Yankee Doodle Dummy (see Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines for details) peered along his branch and chose to ignore me, I gave the trigger a squeeze and the pigeon headed down. One in the bag. Whilst waiting under a tree the flying klaxon landed. Hiding behind a tree trunk he gave it the full vintage car rally cry. I cursed and waited for him to strut his stuff along the branch, which he did!

Another Crosman Premier sped along the barrel with 11.45 ft lb of energy urging it forwards. It met the pheasant's head with a satisfying thwock and the pheasant fell off the branch!

I was going to do some ambush shooting, but it was so damned wet I would have drowned waiting for the rabbits, so I packed up and headed home early!

I smeared the outside of the pigeon with a little goose grease, placed a sprig of fresh Rosemary inside the bird and one bent into a v shape on the breast. 2 rashers of streaky bacon were put on the outside of the bird and the whole lot parcelled in foil. The pheasant was placed in a Le Crucet oven pot, with a sprig of Rosemary inside, two on the outside and plenty of bacon on the outside too. The pheasant was roasted in the oven at 180 degrees C for an hour (fan assisted so add 10 degrees if using a non fan assisted oven) and the pigeon was placed in a halogen oven and done at 150 degrees for the same amount of time!

A flaming mazing! Tasted divine, thoroughly enjoyed my pigeon and my wife and my mother chomped happily through the pheasant!
