paulus 26 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Share Posted January 14, 2014 these days it has to be on permission as running is not an option, limping off slowly is not quite the same still have problems even on permission. i spent Christmas day afternoon a couple of years ago hiding in a ditch, up to my knees in water, freezing my bollocks off with the 2 dogs, whilst on the phone to stabba and waiting to get picked by the mrs as going back to the van was not an option Quote Link to post

Snifferboy 659 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Share Posted January 14, 2014 Interesting post… I have only had lurchers of my own for the past 4-5 years and have never had a dog before this, so as a new comer I don't know any different to it being a pain to get into, I am lucky to have enough permission to keep me, my dogs and the odd mate in reasonable sport and I'm picking up more all the time I'm getting the confidence to ask for it… Laws dictate what you can and cannot do in all aspects of life, so you just have to adjust to them as best as you can, again I have not known otherwise so can't say that it's not as good as it used to be... But family life has and does suffer, when I'm off out for a spin with the light or just trying to keep on top of the dogs fitness, it usually coincides with kids breakfast/dinner/bed times or one of them being ill and so on… So obviously the wife bless her, naturally gets up tight! As it "All gets left to her!!!"I generally get really pissed off when when I can't get out with the dogs, especially if I have organised going ferreting a week in advance and I get told I'm taking the micky!!! So on... Lurchers are a way of life that don't suit everybody, a quiet family walk in the woods can be tricky, trying to explain to a 4 year old why your dog just caught a squirrel in the park while your 9 year old is playing with it and your 11 year is all excited and saying good girl… Can be tricky!!! But I have found it rewarding and I do still try and encourage people that they are a good choice… But do justify that they are not with out their setbacks!!! Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Share Posted January 14, 2014 I've been surrounded by running dogs for over 50 years, wouldn't know what to do without one but recon I'll be the last of my line, I'd not encourage my daughters to take up country sports, especially not lurchers. There are easier hobbies that have less impact on marriages and work. My childhood was spent skipping school with dogs, ferrets and air guns and in truth it was fun but I’d like to think the girls will get a decent education and a career so they have a comfortable life rather than do as I did. By the time I settled to work on a career I was too old for the comfortable early retirement wandering the countryside and had one divorce under my belt due to spending all my time out with the dog’s lamping or racing. I’ll have to work full time until 65, and then if lucky be able to go part time until retirement age at 68 or whatever it will be then. In truth I feel society is so far removed from reality that we will be marginalized out of existence, the other day I had a woman deride me for carrying a few rabbits down the road as it was upsetting and cruel. Having said that I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I was on a study day at Plymouth university and of the 10, doctors, nurses, paramedics etc on the course two said they were involved in country sports, although both shooters. Con6212 155 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Share Posted January 14, 2014 I got into lurchers and lamping after the ban, a friend took me out and that was it I was hooked. I must admit sometimes I wonder why I go through all the hassle that comes with it nowadays but tbh I've not known any better, as I got into the sport when the ban was already in place. So long as I can walk I will be out lamping with my dogs. Nothing will stop me no matter how hard times get. It's in my blood and always will be. Quote Link to post
