Religion/god Given Rights..

Growing up we was told theres 2 things a man doesnt have to justify......his faith or his football team :D ............for me only a complete ignoramus would mock another mans beliefs and ask him to justify them !......I dont really have the brain power to keep up in debates about god/evolution etc but must admit id have a million and one questions to ask you science bods if i was capable of processing words with more than 3 syllables  .......

For me you take what you like from faith and leave behind what you dont like i cant see why it has to be all or nothing im an opinionated black and white type person but i accept a subject of such magnitude could take a lifetime to form a complete opinion on.....ive seen the affects the Christian faith has had on a few people close to me and its enough to keep me interested, how far that go,s who knows but having an inquisitive nature i dont see what harm it does finding out.....these people who give it all this " religion is for weak people "......to that i say bullshit !.....When theres people all around mocking your beliefs but you stand on and say " sorry but i remain faithful to my beliefs "....to me thats strength not weakness......To me being an atheist and believing you have to answer to nothing in the afterlife for what you do in this life is much easier than being a christian and constantly having to think of the repercussions for your actions of yesterday and today........easier or harder....stronger or weaker.

Faith is a personal thing and should always be respected as such in my opinion.

Religion was invented by very clever people, to further their own aims and to keep the common people in shackles, and discourage free thinking, all the main patriarch based religions are the best fair

One thing is fact when all looks lost and you have a millisecond to contemplate your life it's not god you think about or cry out for think about redemption from ... What enters your head for that bri

Baw, I believe in God and I make no apology for it. But if you think I believe in a god like you described "a guy in the clouds" I'd best elaborate a little. . I believe in the God of the bible: a triune, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, uncreated creator, who is not limited to a body like ours. .

To say that the crimes committed by the Spanish inquisition made the nazis look like naughty schoolboys is a deplorable statement and something only a complete and utter idiot would say. I'll play no further participation in this thread.

ATB

Obviously he isn't restricted to a body like ours he's god after all  so tell me mate, after he created man etc, what's he done since this god? Has he had his feet up all this time?

hes been on the black land with KC :laugh:

With a stop watch alarmed to go off at 3 1/2 minutes

Serious question to all the guys who believe in god. Honestly, hand on heart, do you believe there is a guy up in the clouds looking down on us right now? Seriously, I would like to know and I promise I won't laugh.

Ok, I will bite as well.......

I believe there is something more than the black & white of every day consciousness......I don't know what it is, but I suppose we all like to give something a name so "God" is as good as any.

Now, it's not so hard to believe that a man was born 2014 years ago who saw beyond the black & white of mans every day dealings with each other, a person who saw that its all not just about what one person can take from another or what can be pillaged from the earth.

It's also a fact that hate makes you feel bad and love makes you feel good......again, things you can't touch or taste but you experience them all the same.

It's also a fact that when you are actually standing in the most beautiful places on earth you get a different feeling to just looking at a picture, why is that?

To me, that's spirituality........

Could that person 2014 years ago have been so in touch with all this that he tyres to teach us how to experience it every day?......why not? Some may have said this made him "the son of God"

I don't know if it lives "in the clouds" or where but there's something more than mundane, negative, black & white life......that's my god

Also, I think most posters in this thread are not clear if its religion or organised church that they dislike.....one is not the same as the other IMHO

:hmm: thanks for the response (not bite) wilf. So do you go to mass or not? Things are always more magical if your there rather than looking at a picture. Whether that's a holiday destination, football match, having sex  it's the atmosphere, the smells, etc etc, the way I see it mate and mind I was born a catholic. I know how they try to brainwash you from an early age so I've experienced a religious upbringing. I believe religion all started to make kids behave then grew legs. We try all sorts of white lies to make kids behave.... Don't go to sleep the bad man will come get you, if your not good you'll be on Santas naughty list and get nothing. You'll not go to heaven, you'll go to hell. It's no different mate. It's like we say Mother Nature, don't mess with her. I hope to f**k no one really believes there is a woman who looks after nature :D like everything in life, something's take off and some don't. Santa became more popular than the tooth fairy for example. Religion or god became more popular than them all. I find it funny how people dismiss Santa and the Easter bunny but they are related to religion and yet god is real. Christmas Day for example, generally celebrated as the birth of Jesus. That was originally a day celebrated by some nutters as the day of light, as it was the first day after the clocks changed they noticed the days getting longer. So the Christians stole that day and changed it to the birth of Jesus. I've no problem with people believing what they will, I just like trying to understand what makes a rational human being believe in such garbage :D

I must be an ignoramus then. You say a man doesn't have to justify his religion or football team. Does that include having to justify he's been to a game or not to watch his team?now that's what I call being an ignoramus, not debating why a man believes in something.

In response Baw, I go to mass when I feel the need to.

I don't think going and sitting in church makes you a better or worse spiritual person.

I get on pretty well with my local priest, he is a really nice man but I have told him from the get go that I have a hard time going to mass, see I have never been very good with hypocrisy and being from a small-ish community I know most if the people.

So to go and sit in church and watch them all puffing themselves up when I know full well one mob is getting pissed all the time, one mob is the local drug dealers, another wouldn't piss on you if you were in fire, quiet a few are there just to get in the school........being Christian is how you behave to the people and world around you in my eyes, not showing off for an hour each Sunday.

Anyway, in non believers eyes I may be a fool, but im a happy fool ! Lol

Basically all christian traditions are only veneers theyre ancient pagan rituals from the dates such as the solstices to decorating trees holly ivy and mistletoe, santa has been linked to woden easter is actually the name of an anglo saxon goddess, the easter bunny is believed to go back to anglo saxon beliefs of a hare that laid eggs which gave us eater eggs. Obviously the way they forced conversions to christianity was to say keep doing what your doing but pray to a desert god on a cross instead.

Exactly Wilf, I hardly go to church I don't remember seeing anywhere in the bible that you must visit church every Sunday to be a Christian. I go when I want to for reasons only I know.

I too am a fool

 I know what you mean mate. Mass was full of folk turning round to see who's came in, eyeing what they were wearing, who was missing etc. I knew a gang where one of them dropped a paving slab on a guys head on the Saturday and being a good catholic, was at mass the following day :D it's the reason I couldn't be arsed with it, the hypocrisy. Just an excuse for folk to bring others down or feel ferior. I don't care what folk believe in mate, smarter men than me have given their life's for it, I'm just interested in why

religion should be personal to the individual and not forced on anyone else, that's when the problems begin, although i do believe the base of most religions is the need to believe there has to be more.....................

me i am content with the here and now so do not need to be reassured theres something better to come

lets not forget about the pedo priests too in the rc religion. many many helpless kids suffered at the hands of these wankstains who hid behind their religion. is it any wonder why a lot of follower stopped going to chapel

I don't think it was the priests but the way the Catholic Church tried to cover it up, deny it, let it happen etc. your going to get dodgy c**ts no matter what they do. I've a mate who grew up with a guy, went to school with him, got up to all the usual stuff plus more serious stuff like joyriding. We were at his sisters daughters christening or what ever it was and low and behold the minister was the guy he grew up with :D not as serious as fiddling with kids but just shows these guys have a past too. Here a question some of you guys close to priests can ask them (wilf lol) see how priests gave up the right to have the pleasures of a woman to show god how much they love him etc. if there was a nuclear holocoust and somehow only a priest and a woman survived. Would he give up his belief for the good of repopulating mankind or would he die out? The shit that can be found in my head, honest to f**k

religion is the alcohol of the weak minded

Just like Karl Marx, your wrong.

Religion was invented by very clever people, to further their own aims and to keep the common people in shackles, and discourage free thinking, all the main patriarch based religions are the best fairy stories ever told, albeit very clever ones, they have been the cause of more death and suffering than anything in history, the spanish inquisition for instance makes the crimes of the Nazis look like a naughty schoolboy prank in comparison, religion breeds fanaticism, it is as plain as the nose on your face, but still the sheep follow.

Religion is just what you said above ,nothing more nothing less ,nearly every war or conflict will be down to religion or over it ..

Gnasher mate, some of us Atheists have a conscience and a strong sense of ethics, ethics we have developed through as much thought on the subject as any person of a religious background. Ultimately, I have no body to answer to but myself, no God, no judgement day, no salvation. I have one life on this Earth and it's my conscience and pride that keeps me right not fear of God. I would say we are guided by our conscience using our experiences and readings as our start point, Christians are no different only they use the Bible as their start point.

I don't believe it's any easier being an atheist than it is being a Christian, especially when interpretations are often so liberal and far from the literal truth. I mean, how many theists in general actually believe in a judgement day, heaven and hell?

If there ever is such a thing as a creator, a devine power, then the b*****d will have to realise that he shouldn't have made me the way he did and then expect me to be untrue to myself by believing in something that is completely illogical to me. I can only be true to myself, I simply can't follow any other path.

My priest was married and has kids and grandchildren......he lost his wife to cancer before he entered the priesthood.

He had a real job in the real world and knows how the world works, he has just been operated on for pancreatic cancer himself and is very ill.

One of the kindest people I have ever met.

Not everyone is a caraciture ;)
