Religion was invented by very clever people, to further their own aims and to keep the common people in shackles, and discourage free thinking, all the main patriarch based religions are the best fair

One thing is fact when all looks lost and you have a millisecond to contemplate your life it's not god you think about or cry out for think about redemption from ... What enters your head for that bri

Growing up we was told theres 2 things a man doesnt have to justify......his faith or his football team ............for me only a complete ignoramus would mock another mans beliefs and ask him to jus

People have been drawn to and marked certain areas for spiritual reasons for a lot longer than Christianity has been around mate. I get it when I go up the Preselli hills here in Pembrokeshire. The place has long been seen as somewhere spiritual as evidenced by the neolithic standing stones, burial chambers, etc that litter the place. Something about those hills made ancient people dig 2 ton bluestones out of the hillsides and somehow cart them all the way down to Salisbury plain and incorporate them in Stonehenge.. :hmm:

Agreed but cathedrals and churches were mentioned as calming places. Why? Is it something that just is or is it an inherited trait from previous generations?

I don't deny spirituality, never have. It's been around since we were able to look up and wonder.

It's hard to say. We're pretty empathetic as a species, probably more so than we realise. Maybe we know how much these places mean to people who believe so subconsciously act upon it and respect them without even realising? :hmm:

Chris, I can't really say why, they're just pleasing places. They're grand places that are peacefull and provoke thought. If you really push me I can think of half a dozen non religious places I get the same feeling. Some human inventions just make you sit back and think in peace as much as natures inventions. I don't particular care how my brain works, I'd have pursued neurology or something if I did, LOL.

Heres a theory .Perhaps some people are more susceptible to these places than others leading them to think of "divine intervention".

Ive walked and sat at the stones in Avebury near me and felt nothing ,same as Stonehenge .Churches are cold and smell damp to me and to be avoided if i can .Peace is what you make it and i guess if you are troubled anywhere is better than where the trouble is .Personally i worry about nothing ,maybe why i dont need to follow a faith for reassurance .

I think these things are particular to the individual Chris

I couldn't agree more. Maybe I'm focusing too much on the why instead of the where.

Quite possibly. While I enjoy them personally there isn't a single one that can match this, IMHO

It's a pure wonder of creation. Somewhere to sit and ponder the true beginning of where, and why!

Agreed BH, I'm by no means trying to say which is right and wrong. I find the whole avenue fascinating. Learning what makes us tick, this way.

It's something we don't fully understand, and maybe we aren't supposed to at our current level of development.

Some of the strongest people I've known have been religious, seen some horrific things happen to them and they seem to be able to hold it all together. Strength isn't always in a physical sense.

I think you can judge a persons weakness by their faith just as much as you could judge a persons weakness by their lack of it. The old saying you can't judge a book by its cover springs to mind.

I've said before if people want to think less of me for my beliefs then thats up to them ive big shoulders it's their choice,

On a molecular level I believe that everything has a vibration or moves, BH correct me if I'm wrong  I believe that there is energy all around us, I think eventually science will recognise this with all the dark matter, dark energy stuff, something that cant be seen but is very real. The Chinese Chi, Japanese Ki I think will be proved true. I think we will live in a world were power is not derived through conventional mechanics and currently accepted physics but by the manipulation and use of this universal energy field. Now every one thinks I am a total nut job, I might as well carry on :D.............I also believe in genetic memory, were the secrets of the universe are stored in the very DNA of all living things but in a way that we cant yet read and that somewhere in the "junk" DNA that makes up most of our DNA are these secrets, waiting to be read. When I say genetic memory, its probably more like particle memory as we are made from stuff that has always been around, from the beginning. When I'm in the hills I feel a connection to the land, is that psychological, well yes definitely but there is more to it I feel, a direct remembering of my origins.

In my mind there is no supernatural, its just all natural  ..............................yes your right, its time for my medication

To be lead by a leader and follow is in my opinion week but thats only my opinion.Someone with enough trust and self belief in thereself not to need a guide ,faith or whatever in life is in my opinion the stronger .Evolution in the end, apart from mans destruction is the only levelling factor .

Ratting was shite tonight so home early to put you gents right on this matter .

Im not trying to be a bright spark im still in the curious/learning stage on the whole subject......but you say its weak to follow a leader......yet if your beliefs are based on science/evolution as opposed to spiritual/design.......then are you not simply following a different leader ?......are you not making a choice just like anyone else ?

Surely unless you just look out your window and say " i think.................bla bla bla " completely off your own back..............then you have to base your beliefs on something ?......meaning the leader you follow ( evolution ) is essentially science.....no ?

For me i always feel too on edge around churches/cathedrals etc....feels like everyones looking at me and i feel uncomfortable even though i know im there for the right reasons !..............Ive found being close to nature a beautiful thing,i dont think its a coincidence that in recent years the closest i felt to God was the closest i felt to nature that being a mad rambling week alone up in the Scottish Highlands in complete silence with nothing more than a passing bird in the sky for company......whenever im in need of a chat with the big man i find myself wandering to the most remote places possible not a building with people in.....and maybe im wrong for that, but it works for me.
