Minkenry 1,044
Thanks to everyone for sharing those videos! It's funny after having mink for so long, it takes some getting used to watching ferrets again. Their movement is so different! So slow and nonchalant. I remember when I got my first ferret, I though that I needed to train it to come when I called, so that it wouldn't escape while we were out hunting. I got my ferret when he was just barely weaned, and trained him to come to his name. I don't remember exactly how I trained him, as this was many years ago when I was just a young boy. But anyway, I got him all trained so we could go hunting when he was older. Then a couple years later I got a couple adult jills from a friend, and I was surprised that I didn't really need to teach them to come, because they were so slow and calm I could just pick them up again when they came out of a hole or bush. Now that I have mink, I'm so used to their quick darting movements, that when I see the ferrets come out of the holes so slow and quite, I keep wondering what's wrong with them, like if they have dirt in their eyes or something. A mink only moves that slow and calm when it first wakes up, or if their's something wrong. I'll tell you what, ferrets sure fit the job they do! They are SO MUCH easier to work with in the field! Wow, if I had a mink that I could just walk over and pick up, that sure would be nice! I have to call my mink most of the time, or quickly grab their tail when they're not looking I've really enjoyed watching those videos, and have to say I sure am jealous of the warren digging rabbits you guys have! Our rabbits don't dig their own holes, nor do they congregate in big groups like yours do. Ours run around in the bushes, and sometimes hide in other animal's dens, or in rock or junk piles. We are lucky if 2 rabbits are hiding in the same hole, let alone having the half a dozen or more you guys sometimes have in one single warren! You're rabbit hunting is a lot like our rat hunting! lol One hole could have nothing, or a couple dozen animals in it, You never know! Plus there are multiple dens all near each other, instead of all spread out across the country side. How much work does it take to get your ferrets that tame? The ferrets in all of those videos just let their handler pick them up with out a problem. How much of that is training and how much of it is breeding? The 3 ferrets I had as a kid were all that tame, but I don't really know if that was because I worked with them so much, or if they would have been like that anyway. Quote Link to post
