I know exactly how far to go with mine and I am honest enough to admit that there is some point or something that I can't trust any of my dogs with. This is something that we learn with our dogs, the one thing common to all my dogs is food.........too big a temptation, if there was only the one, this could be overcome and it was never an issue when I had only the one dog. Now there are five and it is a totally different ball game, something that I control by feeding them all together in the shed with me sat there, cup of coffee in hand and music playing I do this because, as with humans, some are faster eaters than others and some are just plain greedy. Originally, I just dished their food up and let them get on with it with the knowledge that they all knew better than to take out of anothers bowl, if the dogs didn't sort it themselves, then I would. However, our two boys Graf & Gus came to us from other homes, one not knowing what love and meal times were and the other, obviously a bit of a "Jack the lad", with loads more knowledge & tricks up his sleeve. Graf due to the affection given to him by my family, would gladly stop eating and follow me to the ends of the earth, hence Gus was given the opportunity to devour "seconds"!!!! This is just an example, another could be the other end of the scale, where, lets say the Rotties are here to do a job and that is to protect everything and everybody this side of the boundary. Now if we are home this is controlled, people are introduced to them and by the Rotties behaviour, we can usually judge a persons character and I'd say that 90% of the people who call are fine, the other 10%, well they just don't come here . Now the Shar Pei, Gus , I just have to tell everyone that he will bite them, this is paradise to him and nothing or nobody exists apart from us & ours. Now then, the point I want to make is this, how much do your dogs trust you?, the "Alpha" dog of the pack so to speak. I'll use Stella our Rottie bitch for this I think. As with all of this bree, she has "gunjee" eyes, one is particularly bad. Now I ask her daily, if she wants me to clean her eyes. She will then sit there and let me do the necessary with a moist cotton bud with no fear and only gratitude shown. I dont think i did to bad with her but she does have some funny little ways ,she sucks clothes till there wet through given the chance, she didnt come down to the living room all last weekend as me & my son were away , she only came down to lie on the sofa when we got back,my husband said she sulked the whole weekend,she wouldnt go near him she gets jealous off the cat being fussed & will chase him away if i go to stroke him She is terrified of the ironing board & black bags she brings home huge peices of wood, but other than that she is normal Quote Link to post Share on other sites

skycat 6,174 Posted September 21, 2007 Report Share Posted September 21, 2007 This is a good topic: the knowledge that my dogs trust me to help them if they are in difficulties or pain make me feel very honoured: if they have a thorn in their foot they cant get out they come hopping to me for help. I have a couple that are very empathetic and worry if there are bad vibes around, either from me or someone else. Starlight is self appointed protector of the pack and if a strange dog comes piling into them when we're out on exercise she will see it off though never with more force than is necessary: luckily she hasn't had to deal with any real nasties yet. She will never go after another dog that isn't bothering us, but one look from me and she shoulder barges and drives the nuisances away: she always checks with me first to see how I am reacting to the situation, and if it's only a young teenage nuisance she is relatively gentle with it unless it really needs telling off! She is also a good guard and tells me if there's someone about out the front of the house long before the other dogs have heard anything. Her grandmother was the same, a force to be reckoned with if something pissed her off, but very tolerant generally speaking. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
