Young Ferrets

Recommended Posts

How you doing guys.. got 2 young jills here, they've been out 2 or 3 times now , first time out ever rabbiting they bolted 1 into the net for us no problem..was over the moon with that :) worked great for their first days rabbiting ever, now when im taking them out there is rabbits about , these holes usually hold a few rabbits, There is a fair few new holes being dug at the moment too, aswell as quite a bit of fresh rabbit droppings roundabout the holes and the newly dug ones, i usually put em down above ground and just let them disappear down themselves, when they do, they seem to disappear for a couple of minutes & come back up then when you go to pick em up they bolt back down n start acting up, its very frustrating, i know they are young though so im just bein patient, not expecting much as there still playful at that age. things im askin is what do you guys reckon there not bolting them for ? as im certain these holes are holding rabbits.. is it just the ferrets are young and playful still??

Thanks guys

First off where's you get them from ??. Second you've said it yourself there young if there not tuff as nails a rabbit in a stop end will put them off , there's a field on my permision one of . That is absolutely covered in rabbit dropping yet the warrens on it hold little or nothing .

There young as you said only been out two or three times , the burrows maybe play holes as we call them the rabbits only used them when hard pressed we only ferret what a dog marks saves so much time . You tried working them with a older ferret in the burrow as well . And when your at home i would be running them threw pipes and let them come out and pick them up real slow make a bit of noise with your feet and get them used to a bit hussle and bustle that goes with setting nets killing rabbits on a warren .Because when your out and they start that your going to grab at them in a impatient

rush to get on and its just going to make them worse .

If that happens when ive a young ferret out we just pick up the nets my son continues ferreting and i wait for the youngster to show let it calm down pick it up and catch up them its in the box for a while till its calmed down or the next thibg you have a sulker on your hands

Ive been ferreting a while guys, i know what im doin, just never had them do this before though thats why i wanted to ask.... ferrets ive had before have all been great little workers. was just looking for a little advice on why there acting up like this as all the years ive ferreted ive not had one act up like this .. they bolted a rabbit on there first outing, usually after that theres no stopping em ye know :) they will get there, as i said im very patient with them, as i know there still young and i wasnt expecting very much from them at the moment anyway.. i think next season will be there season, i just wanted to get them out and about where rabbits were and run them through some holes , a few training days really.

Cheers

Got to agree with you get them out and about as much as you can and I still don't expect much from them and next year I would still run a older ferret threw any burrows they have worked to see if there going to make the grade

that's about all there is too say, I have one like yours she is coming on tho and getting better and better but if she's just bolted a rabbit she goes silly for a few mins, if its a dead bury she is OK I know this as I run my older ferrets thru after but if nothing bolts and she comes out going loopy..... Older ferret goes in and out comes the spade I'm patient with her because she is so young and a stop end rabbit is still too much for her, can't wait for next season with her tho, just be patient itl pay off in the end

Have you got dogs matey, a good marking dog is essential when ferreting, and unless my dog marks, ferret stays put, as for droppings outside warrens, means nowt, and as for your youngsters bombing back dow the holes, ive had that also, patience as you say, all will come well

good luck
