The Proof Is In The Results!

Recommended Posts

So I've spent a few years ferreting, shooting and generally controlling the rabbits on one large bit of permission... Until recently. It appeared I had hammered numbers (there were loads when I first got it) and it was short of sport. Time to chase new permo. After all, anyone who tells you it isn't all about numbers is lying. Pigeon shooting isn't pigeon shooting with out the pigeons, so rabbit shooting isn't without rabbits.

Anyway, a few saturdays ago, I did the old door knocking and got about 200 acres of mixed livery yard, and arable fields for one farm, 250 acres of similar a few miles away and about 200 acres of broken up arable a few more miles away. This is part 1 of the proof - take note all of you who ask for permo, it can be done.

Last night was part two. The piece of land is adjoining the original, well hammered land. I have never seen so many rabbits in the lamp, or hedgerows so peppered with holes. After having sighted the rifle in during the day, I proceeded to set up my scope mounted lamp (bought from compoundarcher) and loading the magazines. 90 rounds later, and I have shot over 70 rabbits on my own. 60 picked up (4 too small to do anything with and a few lost in the base of the hedgerows). New personal best.

The final thing for the night was to collect my bag, (several trips back to the car!) and to gut them all.

Now, I drive a Renault Clio (Clive, and I treat him like a 4x4!), which isn't the biggest car in the world. Try fitting 60 rabbits in your boot! I had rabbits in the foot wells and all over the place!

Anyway. To all of you trying to get permo, put in the effort, and the rewards will be great!

That's a fantastic effort. I guess they were just happy to be out in the open rather than being drowned slowly underground!

Just shows what can be accomplished if you're willing to put the effort in to reach out and touch new farmers (ahem). Are you selling the meat on or are you your family and friends' new bezzie mate and pushing it on.

Either that or you could do a Man v Food style challenge. 60 rabbits baked in a pie, cooked in a commercial oven and have 45 minutes to finish it...

Aww heck I've gone all hungry now...snack time.

Nice one again.

Long term supplier of my local butchers. He always has a demand for them. Sells more than I shoot, so he's happy to take all. We have an agreement that any that are too bad to sell, I buy back for the same price and while I'm in the shop I cut the meat off and mince it all for my own use.

Nicely done, always good to keep it local! Love that you can use his equipment to prep your dinner - better the mess in his shop than your kitchen too ;)
