foxhound45 167
Sounds like he knows which rabbits he can catch and which he can't. He could be carrying an injury somewhere or his fitness is down and the runs are taking alot out of him, but I honestly believe it is to do with him knowing that the run will take alot of effort or the fact he is gauging before he takes off. Have you tried lowering his food for a day before hunting, I don't mean starving him, but just lowering it enough that he is hunting hungry. I know some lads will think that should not be done, but it once in a while won't hurt the dog as long as he is well hydrated. 3 Quote Link to post

RossM 8,119
Aye my bitch here now, sometimes she will run every rabbit as hard as she can and some days she'll see the rabbit motoring and think "I'm not getting that!" Does my tits in but she puts enough in the freezer to make me put up with it, selective runs, heard a few collie blooded dogs tend to end up doing this. Quote Link to post
pro keeper 111
Dont worry too much keep fitting the dog up get it on the button, i feed my dogs morning and night so if i take them out working you feed them when home, running a dog thats had a gut full of food could kill it with a twisted gut or make it do half a job and should never be done, at the age of 7 dogs start slowing down anyhow be it that they get smart or just getting a little long in the tooth. the vets at one stage said that every year your dog is thats 7 in human years 7 x7 =49 how many 49 year old men do you see playing football for 90 minutes not many lol Quote Link to post
bigoy19706 276
I no hes not 100% fit and he has just had an injury to his back leg also when I just been out to see him his feet are bad as the ground was hard with frost so looking at it now am not as bothered as I was last night I never seen a dog just let bunny run off before Quote Link to post

stabba 10,745
Injury to back lag..sore feet ..unfit....recipe for disaster. 7 year old is not too bad an age really. should still be a few seasons left in him if he aint been worked that hard. Infact ive found the best years are between the age 5 and 7. Sadly without the above ailments alot of collie x's tend to pick and choose their runs which can be a tad annoying. atb stabba 4 Quote Link to post

I think the trick is if you can try to get few easy runs in 1st, so there more confident ,and if fit as well the dog might try at nearly every rabbit you put it on. my dog Bryn will run as hard on the 1st rabbit as the last one , so 30-40 runs aint to bad, but when he had enough that's it he want run any more .either easy rabbits or hard rabbits, that's prob more of a collie thing I think, as you here other lurchers will push them selves that bit harder.? my pup Buck running well , he caught most he been run at, so he trys hard with every run, not pushed him to hard but deff tried him a bit . Before done me shoulder he got 11 , and 6 were on the bounce, as say get them catching 1st and they might not pick there runs Quote Link to post
goldfinch2007 2,332
sounds to me like its jacked pure and simple..give it away as a pet or retire it Quote Link to post
morton 5,368
The dogs caught 2 out of the 4 its ran, became picky on 1,possibly because the dog thought it had little chance of catching, some dogs do this.Id still call that a useful night, the nuggets that call it a jacker or a cull are the reasons some question their dogs ability now, just accept the dog for what it is,be happy and then the both of you will live more harmoniously,in all honesty the lads that are the quickest to cull, apportion blame or call the dog a jacker, are never the sort to learn anything useful or constructive from. Not all dogs are the same, work with what you have at hand, thats the true sign of a lurcherman/woman. 13 Quote Link to post
