theobromine poisoning

Recommended Posts

Tia's done it again, last time it was five of my socks, this time she's managed to find 2 Ainsley Harriet Belgium choc bars from somewhere (missus denies buying them!!!). found the empty packet Monday night when I came back from work so didn't feed her anything, Tuesday morning she starts being sick (about 6AM) by 7AM I'm on the phone to the vets, then 8.30AM into the vets. They put her on a drip, with drugs to control the vomiting and cancel the theobromine from the chocolate. none of this worked and she continued being sick throughout the day so they kept her in. Wednesday I get a phone call first thing in the morning asking can they do an anesthetic and use an endoscope to look at her stomach as she's started vomiting blood. Turns out her stomach lining is bleeding. He thinks they've fixed the theobromine poisoning but can't work out whats irritating her gut? changed the medication to an oral liquid that is supposed to line the stomach and calm/sooth it plus bring the bleeding under control but she's still being sick every two - three hours. so she's got to stay in again tonight.

I hope she'll be fine but let it be a warning Chocolate CAN kill dogs! it was only two bars of belgium choc and although she's small for a bullmastiff (60-65lb) she's still a large dog.

sorry to hear that hope she pulls through for you. it seams to affect lots of dogs differently some seam to be able to cope with it others cant even sniff it. i think it has some thing to do with the different levels of coco in the choc. my bull x ate one of those huge easter eggs (that my flat mate at the time left sitting on the floor he was only about 5 months old and when i found the riped box i nearly riped my flat mates head off. but we were lucky it gave him the shits badly but nothing else it was pretty scary though.

Hope everything turns out ok. When i was a crazy 15 year old i was lamping mad, i regularly fed my lurcher a mars bar in the afternoon if i was going out on the night.... :icon_eek: bloody silly things you do when young eh?... :big_boss:

It's a good job you didn't give him the Mars Bar orally .................. :whistling:

Hope all's well Bullmastiff, sounds like you got your hands full there!

My spanial Teal, had a mars bar or a couple of penguin bars at lunch time as a pick me up on beat days for over a decade, some years I was beating 4 days a week during the season, never seemed to affect him in the slightest???

Well, quick update, apparently she didn't vomit at all last night or this morning so they've given her some fluid orally rather than IV and she seems to be keeping it down. If she's kept it down by 3.30PM then she can come home. :victory:

Now I've just got to find a way of paying the vet's bill!!! 3 nights in five star acommadation , drinks 'on tap' and a personal maid to clean up after you!!! me thinks this is going to hurt!

Got your hands full is right, she'll eat anything she can get in her mouth, last time we took her to the beach she managed about half a kilo of sand and a few litres of sea water before throwing up!

The reason why a mars bar or penguin would have very little effect on a dog is because both have just a thin coating of chocolate and are made up mostly of nougat/toffee in the case of mars bar, and biscuit in the case of penguin. They are also both made of milk chocolate which contains less theobromine than dark chocolate or cocoa products. The Belgian chocolate is probably more potent because it has a higher cocoa content and therefore more theobromine. Hope your dog gets better soon

Well Tia's home, she's lost an enormous amount of weight and very fragile and shakey  . Not allowed anything to eat until tomorrow and then it's tea spoons of Hills I/D food little and often. small amounts of electrolytes mixed with water tonight plus medication. back to the vets on monday to check her progress.

Still she's home, and it shouldn't take too long to get her back to normal.

Cheers

Luke
