Invest in some casting lessons by a qualified instructor in the area, and ask if they can supply a starter kit, maybe cheaper than through the retailers.

River wise maybe a 5# rod, reel and floating line.Theres a load of flies for sale on line,fastmail,fullingmill,fish4 flies etc.

Our season starts in feb for the browniesn so plenty of time to get practicing.

If you need help with some flies pm me I'll tie you some foc.

Well my first taste of fishing taught me a huge amount yesterday. Number one, check the weather first as it was freezing!! Second, fly fishing is much harder than it looks. Many thanks to Hot Meat and

Fishing small rivers is great fun I find it similar to rough shooting in many ways you have to use your wits more compared to sitting on a stocked lake where there is 3000 fish swimming round in circles.

A short 3 weight rod is ideal for small rivers/brooks and don't be suckered by fancy reals they don't do anything but a nice rod is always a pleasure to use...fancy kit is there to catch fishermen not fish

Well my first taste of fishing taught me a huge amount yesterday. Number one, check the weather first as it was freezing!! Second, fly fishing is much harder than it looks. Many thanks to Hot Meat and his seven year old son who made me look totally useless! Thirdly, never take your six year old daughter who made me look even worse. Great to be out learning something with the kids though.

Many thanks to Hot Meat for taking time out in sub zero conditions to give us a brief introduction to fishing. A top man who is clearly very knowledgeable.

If you have any fields near you, you can practice using a bit of fluff tied to the end of you line. Look on youtube for some good tips but basically don't let you line drop when it's behind you and try to use the same amount of power for both back and forward casts.

and remember....if your flies not in the water you wont catch any fish  you don't need to get it miles out, often you catch fish on the margins of a lake.

Untill some lure chucker walks along the bank from you and procedes to wade out to the top of his waders and cast for the horizon. :diablo:

only ever fished small rivers for chub on the fly using a floating daddy long legs, great fun wandering up and down the river up to your waist wearing jeans and trainers, it was the only way i could find to cast without hooking every bit of cover in sight  i did once catch a 22ib carp on a deer hair pellet fly, that was on a small commercial puddle but was great fun :laugh: sadly i reversed over my winfield (woolworths)rod and reel one afternoon so that was the end of my fly fishing exploits :laugh:
