Magpie Mayhem

Recommended Posts

hello im in need of some decent advice on magpie shooting, the wood at the back of my house is littered with magpies, but can never seem to get in range for a well placed shot,is there an easier way than just stalking in the woods ? they only seem to stay in the safety of the tree's so decoying on the field is out of the question, thanks in advance craig.

What other options have you tried to get rid of them?

i dont really get what you mean?,just stalking and laying in wait with the air rifle.

Just wondered who has asked you to get rid of them, what problems they're causing and what other options you've considered before shooting them? As far as I'm aware it's not just sufficient to say I don't like Magpies and look to stalk them with an air rifle in some woods near your house. You need to demonstrate there's an issue and what you're doing about it in accordance with the General Licences (whichever one you have decided is appropriate in this situation).

All birds are protected by law and you're not supposed to just go around baiting them in to pick them off with an air rifle for a bit of sport. If someone complained about what you're doing and you aren't aware of the relevant background and what you should be able to demonstrate then you can end up in a spot of bother. We've all seen the lengths animal charities will go to when they want to create a fuss in the media

I asked the question as I'm not saying everyone needs to be ultra cautious but just picking up a rifle and bagging some magpies because you want to isn't really in the spirit of hunting and shooting and without due consideration it is against the law.
