jimmy.jim86 1
I've just made a gate net it's 18 ft long to make a 12 ft net. I've made it 18 meshes deep as a video off YouTube shows but to me seems to deep. Is it too deep and if so could I half the net then restring the top ad bottom lines?? Any long net making advice is more than welcome Cheers James. 1 Quote Link to post
bobcullen79 1,495
Nah. Its not deep enough to half and make two nets. Your net wants to be 13 - 15 meshes deep. Also your net hasnt quite enough running kill in it. Ideally you want to rig your nets by half, e.g - a 12ft net will take 24ft to make. It should catch though. 1 Quote Link to post
bullx100% 681
I'm agreeing with bob mate you want 100% bagging/kill on your nets as it's bagging what catches... 1 Quote Link to post
The one 8,506
You maybe have gone a wee bit over board 12 to 15 meshes deep would of been plenty but your needing to knit another six feet on it to give you 100% bagging for a 12 foot net Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,696
Depends what your using the net for,, are you using it in the traditional way for catching hares at night in a gateway ,, ? Or is it just going to be used as a stop net for ferreting,,, they can be two vastly different things. What's the mesh size,, ? 3 Quote Link to post

What's the mesh size,, ? agreed! if its to be a stop net ie like a minnie long net for ferreting then its too short, but if its what i would (and i think tomo ) call a gate net then it will have a ring or slider on each end and it will be like a massive purse net, set up on two poles if so then the lenght and width are 100% spot on for how i make them..only i use "5 and a bit inch mesh for hares Quote Link to post
jimmy.jim86 1
It's for ferreting, now I've finished and stretched it out Icahn see how overboard I've gone on depth, I'll call it a first attempt and chalk it up. The next one ill make 12meshes deep and 24 ft long. I intended on making 5 or 6 on poles as I Have 2 25yard long nets just wanted some short ones for gaps in hedges and odd spots. Quote Link to post
jamesmc 582
THATS THE JOYS OF KNITTING NETS JIM.....YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING......YOU WILL ONLY GET BETTER AT IT... ,I HAVE TO ADMIT I HAVE LEARNED QUITE ALOT OFF OF SOME OF THE OLD BOYS ON HERE.... 1 Quote Link to post

perthshire keeper 1,239
food for thought...maybe it wont need to be as long (to give the required bag) as it has vertical bad instead of horizontal bag? 3 Quote Link to post
Rabbiting man 1,192
I make my hare gate nets 18 ft x 7 ft that 72 x 28 meshes. I uses a 3 inch board giving a full mesh of 6 inch. I start my gate nets at 12 meshes, I add two extra meshes on each row. That means i'm knitting by going 12, 14, 16 to I get to 28 meshes, then a carry on to I get to 63 meshes, then I decrease two meshes on each row. so other words it's (63) is 28 meshes, (64) is 26 meshes, (65) is 24 meshes I then carry on to I get to 72 meshes long in which should be 12 meshes. Then it's up to you if you want to uses rings or sliders. What i'm making is a large poke net really, here are a few pic's of one of mine. 4 Quote Link to post

Surmising that you are using a 4" mesh The total number of meshes you have in a 4 yard net (12') rigged length @ 18 meshes deep is 972 (54m long x 18m deep). If the net was 15 meshes deep and rigged by halves (100% bag as they call it) it should have 1080 total number of meshes, (72ml x 15md) so your not that far out and the net should catch well enough.
