Definitive & Objective Nv Advice For A Centrefire

Recommended Posts

For a very long time, probably like most on here, I continually read about the plethora of NV units & illuminators available on the market nowadays, further complicated by the various home made systems. Most claim fantastic results, however in my opinion, the claims nearly always fall short of reality.

I want to buy a NV set-up, however, I've yet to watch or read an objective review of all the products.

My take on it is;

At the lower end of the market there's the Pulsar stuff which I've tried & didn't like. Then there's the bolt on NS 50/200 which looks more suitable for airgun/RF rifles. Then the new Yukon Photon and as quick as a flash I now see Starlight have launched a new digital system called 'Arrow' starting at £399 up to £899!

Then at the expensive end of the market there's the Starlight Gen 3 Archer starting at £1650.

I mean where do you start with it all?

For a bit of advice, how about a quick survey of folk on here to award a score against some of theses units, based on the ability to clearly identify a fox sized target at 200 yds, good enough to take a shot, consistently, and hold zero. Assumption is that all the units have good illumination.

0 is crap. 10 is excellent.

NS50 -

NS200 -

Photon-

Arrow (399) -

Arrow (899) -

Archer -

Have I missed any?

Bit of fun really, but it may help in understanding various units ability.

:-)

0 is crap. 10 is excellent.

NS50 -

NS200 - 7. A bit fiddly but works well out to 300 yards

Photon-

Arrow (399) -

Arrow (899) -both should be good units when released but not available as yet. Far as I know.

Archer - 10. I use mine all the time. I'm a big fan.

You need to understand that with addons such as the archer and nitesite and others that there are more factors such as scope and IR which make a big difference.

I can just identify a fox out at 300 yards using the firefly laser on the archer if the fox is moving from, say right to left and the batteries are fully charged. I can see the fox at 300 yards a lot clearer using the nightmaster because it has a cleaner light than a laser. I have a 72mm aspheric lens which should be even brighter at 300 yards. I am just waiting to get it back cos I broke it.

A lot of the home builds are very very good and there is a lot of stuff on you tube showing the results.

The best way is to find someone local to you with some kit and go out and try it. I wouldn't bother with gen 1 myself. You could build your own digital system for less money and it will be a lot better.
