Guest vin Posted January 2, 2014 Report Share Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) It was our 1st ferreting trip of 2014 this morning. Met Tomo early doors and we headed for spot with some small woods on bankings that lots of rabbits run to at night when were up there lamping.So now the cover has died down enough to find the holes its time to start getting into all the tricky little spots we have been avoiding so far this season. We split up and worked our way along the banking following the dogs and Dropping the Ferrets in when We got a mark etc etc.. I left Tomo and his pack on the 1st warren and moved along myself until i got a mark with the dogs.. Im in a place with lots of cover and trees etc etc with way too many obsticles for the dogs to have high catch rates if i were to use no nets.. So I netted up the 1st marked warren and dropped in a jill...after a couple of small rumbles I watch a beautifull Weasel make a sharp exit from the hole... I then get a good bolt from the bunny.. But only the 1 rabbit from here.. Next warren produced 3 good bolts all nicely netted etc etc..After a while I met up again with Tomo and we did a couple of warrens together and caught a few more..this was much the order of the day..If the dogs marked I net up ,, if not..dont even bother getting ferrets out. I had a couple of tricky little digs , not too deep but with lots of stone in the way etc etc.. The ferrets were working very well as so were the dogs..they caught a couple of escapee's and sat on the holes very well . WE also gained a little bit more permission for future use at an ajoining farm to the one we were on when we met the farmer on the lane and had a chat with him.. we ended the day on 28 bunnies..all of them were worked for and earned fair and square, A great start to 2014. I forgot about the bad things that happened in the day and focus on the best bits.. . lol. PS. Yes Jim..we were at the golden gateway to rabbit paradise..lol. PPS. to the chap we saw ferreting in the wood up above us...There was no need to run off old fella,If you had hung around for a chat,you could have tagged along and helped me carry a few bunnies....lol.
