Blaise 2,321
A reply for the title... Since few years, i make statistics of all my hunts (badgers). Hunting time for each dog, depth dug, game catched... For each dog, I can say exactly how many time he had been used, how long or how deep. I do it for all the dogs, the best and the worst. But you can't compare with other statistics because it depends too much of what you measure, de type of soil, the risk that you accept and sometimes the chance... Inside your own statistics, you have to be very cautious. For example, il you keep your best dog for the more difficult, statistics of your best dog will be lower than the datas of an average dog used on easy places. And then ? 2 Quote Link to post

Blaise 2,321
This season we had 27 hunting day, we will have 2 days more before the end (35 for the previous season). We dug 79 meters or 260 ft this season (124 meters or 407 ft in 2012). We have been a bit better or more fortunate : 2,9 meter or 9,5 ft per day in average this season (3,6 m or 11,8 ft per day in 2012). That's the average, it's very different day after day, between 1 meter to 8 - 3 to 26 ft. The real hunting time reach to 101 hours, it's only the working time of the dogs (the time for catching the badger, to dispatch, to rebuilt the terrier, to clean the place, to have a drink or sing isn't recorded). 132 hours for the past season. It's the same average duration : 3,7 and 3, 8 hours per day. In average, We have been a bit lucky this season : 2,1 animals catched each day against 1.8 before. Concerning dogs, 8 different dogs had worked for 78 hunts. 55% of success. In average a dog hunts 1h20 and we dig 1 meter or 3 ft on the dog. The dog of the year in our crew : 19 hunts, 26 meters or 85 ft, 32 hours, 22 badgers. The worst : 7 hunts, 2,2 meters or 7 ft, 4 hours, no badger. According to me, with badgers, 20 hunts for a dog during a season may be a maximum. After a wound or after a very long hunt, the dog need a long rest. And if you work too much with the same dogs, they will be retired early and the young dogs will not trained. Edited January 3, 2014 by Blaise Quote Link to post
block end 242
There you go that bitch of nuggets has threw it in, just dug 9 foot to her for basically feckall...dug the bitch umpteen times up until the pups never really had a nasty bang and now this. Makes you want to pack it all in when a handy one who has done so much for you dont want it anymore....like nuggett said stig come on down, bring plenty of dogs and bobby blackheart can come too, providing he agrees on being blind folded and sat on a spinning chair until we reach the destination. Back to ferreting and fishing for me Thought he was giving her a rest mate Quote Link to post
smasher 1,055
some lads swear that by taking a litter of pups of a bitch it can improve there attitude towards work, but no two dogs are the same, and if it were as easy as that everyone would have a yard full of workers.the minerals have to be there in the first place Quote Link to post
gonetoearth 5,144
How many digs make a terriers man Quote Link to post
the goat 642
She had enough of a rest. Blaise, I suppose badger digging would be a different ball game...in countries where its legal id like to see how many dogs could keep up with it regular. Might have to cross the water sometime to a country wherenits legal and see what it's all about. Smasher...seen it mature a bitch and make her alot better bitch, but then she sadly died doing her job in a tight earth..shame this bitch didnt change for the better. Quote Link to post
