The life or career of a working terrier differes greatly among terriers. Some may only be complete sounders and more complete nut cases but both will get the job done. The sounder should go on to live a

The only thing guarenteed with terriers is most will be owned worked and bred by total muppets...

there will be no direct answer too this question ,.......some terriers get better with every dig, some slower , some wont , some will,.......some start early , some late,.....every dog is different...

So none of you have a dog you could take anywhere and be 100% confident in .IM TALKING EARTH WORK NOT ROCKS BALES OR TREES before anyone pipes up .Sad state of affairs that .Some terriers dont inspire confidence but others dont deserve the doubt admitted on here .Sort your kennels out for the new year and bury the shite .

asked me that 18 month ago and i would have said yes! 110% in my wee dog........i had/have a dog that a few on hear have seen she worked rock and earth and worked and bolted fox/mink and a few other things over her 6 years of working and she was used a lot for what i wanted her for, she bayed non stop for hours if needed and VERY rarely got a mark on her she had a few bad ones but she tryed her little heart out..and being small i would often get a call from other keepers to put her in where theirs couldent/wouldent fit,,, and if working watery earths she would be neck deep in water baying like feck......then for no reason last spring at a cubbing job she said no i had seen cubs drop in as we went to the earth ,i had shot the vixen that morning and she refused to enter and has done ever since and if she dose enter she will go down turn around and sit just out of sight in the hole doing f**k all......the only reason i havent shot it is she has worked her whole life and worked well...

Once a dog is well into its working life then if it walks the guaranttee is null and void in my book which opens up another can of worms as to what really happened beneath the turf lol.

some of us old school might have differant standards some of the dogs around now we would`nt of tolerated back in the 70/80s even what i`ve got on my yard now ,,,,, some of us have been fortunate enough to see the best years of the terrier game all i can say to any one in it now is forget your 100% ,forget your books and internet , get out and enjoy your terriers because time flys and it soon all passes you by,,, ;)

Losing a life or getting lost as you put it is a far cry from spewing . You talk of dogs in the past tence .Tell me mate ,honestly have things changed so much in your kennels that you cant trust a dog to put in a 100% guaranteed performance .

. Just dont beleave in using 100% and garenteed. And yes in an artificial lol Edited by gonetoearth

If your looking back at the original question then its one that can't be answered....

The only thing that 'makes a dog' is you and your trust in the tyke to see the job through each and every time it slips into the ground.

i had a bitch never put a foot wrong in three seasons. one outing with company she entered and then came off. we dug it with a different terrier. . i was gutted and took the bitch back to her kennel and rested her for a month and tried her again and she was back as if nothing had happened. and was flawless for four more seasons. . before she was forced to retire due to injuries sustained over many digs /bolts. an old fella told me that it would be hormones due to the bitch loseing a litter .a few months earlier. who knows. they are flesh and blood after all. i sure am glad i kept faith in her as she produced a couple of good terriers and they also did although some came to hard.

Would you breed from that dog well into his working years if he jacked, and if not why not,we would be waiting a long time till we breed and could end up having nothing at the end,it's all about taking a chance but no pup will be gaurunteed just my thoughts
