New Years Eve Trip

Recommended Posts

i got up this morning expecting to go out ferreting but it was raining heavy as normal of late anyway i desided to knock it on the head but by dinner time it had faired up so i desided to go out for a few hours with the ferret and my patterdale pup who is 5 month old so of i went to pick my mate up then on to the first place its only a small wooded area but it sometimes holds a few rabbits we netted the first sett up only a 3 holer and entered the ferret and i took hold of my pup after about 30 seconds a rabbit bolts into one of the nets so i let my pup go and i grabbed the net then the pup grabed hold of the rabbit and started to shake it took it off the pup and despatched it put the net back on and waited but the ferret came out so nothing more at home lifted all the nets and moved on to the next set only a 2 holer put the nets on put the ferret in and straight away a rabbit bolts into the net a good start to the day 2 rabbits out of 2 setts and a very keen pup anyway we moved on to the next set this one was slightly bigger but only 5 holes to it we netted up again and entered the ferret we waited about 2 mins before we heard bumping then the rabbit bolts into the net about 5 feet away from me so i let the pup go again and she ran straight over and grabbed hold of the rabbit in the net which i was really pleased with to say the least after she'd grabbed that rabbit she seemed to be more switched on with head down rabbit holes and ratching about alot more anyway there was no more in the set so we desided to head to another place about a mile away. we got to the first set but it looked dead so we didnt do it we walked down the dyke looking at other sets that used to be good ones but they were all dead with leaves in all the holes and no signs of rabbits about at all so we desided to leave that dyke and head down towards the river where theres a banking with a couple of sets on it but the side we wanted to be on was under water as it runs along side the river but on the side next to the field there was one set that looked fairly clean the pup was off at this point and when i looked where it was all i could see was back legs and tail sticking out of one of the holes when it came out it just wanted to go back to the hole i said to my mate i think this dog knows theres something in there so i put it on the lead and we netted up it was only a 4 holer we entered the ferret and after a min or so rabbit number 1 bolts out of the hole the dog was down we re netted and waited again then i felt bumping under my feet so we waited for about 5 or 6 mins then i located it at about a foot so out comes the shovel and after a short dig rabbit number 2 is in the bag the ferret went back in once more and after about another 5 mins rabbit number 3 bolts out in to the net after that the ferret showed no more interest so we deside to pack up and head for home as it was starting to get dark we ended up with 6 rabbits in total and a really keen pup and a very pleased owner heres a few pics hope you like them atb for the new year

Brilliant that's the age for them to be out with the ferrets especially one on one time like that

Cheers pal it's the second time she's been out with me and she seems to be coming on in leaps and bounds which I'm really pleased about I try and spend as much time as I can with her on her own getting her used to the ferrets and livestock. Atb for the new year.
