Never by a wild rat but I had 4 pet rats and must have been bitten 40+ times as one was a little b*****d!

Had two ferrets and was bitten about 10 times and I'd definitely say a ferret bite is worse pain wise its just the diseases of a wild rat that would bother me.

f**k sake I panicked after realising I'd cut myself gutting a rabbit and the wound was full of rabbit blood. Yuck. I now like carrots though :)

??? Forgive me. But, that just doesn't appear to add up. I've absolutely no wish to raise contention here. But; Are you certain you're in possession of all the facts surrounding this dreadful incident? Or, were you just told 'what happened'?

Only, 'vital organ' failure is indicative of Weils Disease. And Weils isn't normally transmitted by a rats bite. It's a bacterium passed through the rats urine. It can then survive in water and enter the victims blood stream through mucus membrane. Or an open wound.

I'd respectfully suggest that the more likely scenario might be that this poor guy was bitten by a rat. Then, not having taken sufficient measures to cover the resultant wound, carried on working.

Thus exposing himself to rat urine contaminated organic matter. The straw. And infection gained entry to his system. The rest, we don't need to discuss. RIP :(

Thats a scary thought, I handle straw and shavings every day and usually have a few cuts on my hands most days if even just a scratch.

This threads made me think twice about carrying on working with either with an open wound of any kind, although it has to be done either way.

Just to think how many of us have pulled straw?hay out of a bail and put it in our mouth and chewed on it not thinking rat urine could be on it urgh !

i know! i mean how many times have we pulled a handfull of straw out of a bale and stuffed it down our trousers to "pack it out"

ohh wait just me then?
