Someone on the other thread mentioned 400 yard slips; well a greyhound at full speed would take about 25-30 seconds just to get up to the quarry !! I think some people exaggerate the lamping distances, just as some of the coursing lads exaggerate the times of the courses.

Who said 400 yard slips? That's not right.

 

A greyhound at full speed would only take 20 seconds to cover that distance, all things being equal. There's too many variables to take into account to work that out properly though.

 

Yes, definately too many variables, by the time the greyhound had covered that 400 yards the hare would have gone a fair distance itself.

 

Hares didn't used to get up when they saw a dog 400 yards away, you'd never need to slip that far.

 

I think Brigzy was getting confused between someone saying that they could spot stuff and get eyeshine at 400 yards and someone saying that they slipped at 400 yards.

I think it was Maxhardcore talking about 400 yard slips.

 

The nearest track record to 400 yards I can find is 415 metres at Harlow at 25.5 seconds, so if running at night on rough ground, not a track, my estimate isn't far out. I reckon you would have a champ if it could do 400 yards in 20 seconds !!! Anyhow, my point was that it would take a fair while for a Lurcher to get up on it's quarry at that distance, even if you could see it that far away.

I don't like to slip on anything under 1mile ... I call them 400 yards kick ups .. I like to run a beddy x whip for them long slips don't take much time getting to it and you can't here the f****r yapping...

With regard to this following the beam 800 yard,,,,,

 

I know some of you would lamp large game at great distance,,,ie let the dog see the eyes reflected,, and the dog wind the said beast,,turn the lamp off as the dog ran down to the quarry,,, then the lamp back on ..

 

With rabbits,, I still maintain seeing a rabbit beyond 300 yard on the lamp is dam near impossible,,,

Ok sometimes you may get a long slip,, 200 yard,, and the rabbit and dog,, run the other way and of course you keep the lamp on in the general area where they are,,, and sometimes you get a catch...

 

But 300 yard is a very long way,,, don't believe me,, pace it out on a flat field,, put a dead rabbit on the ground,, get your lamp out and see how easy it is to see,,

 

TOMO you do as many rabbits as anyone what would be your longest slip for a rabbit?

IMO even yard is a VERY long slip for a rabbit, or anything else for that matter. In the beam distances look double what they are.

If you mean the longest I have ever slipped a dog ,,, I couldn't say,,, I was doing a few the other night local to me on some winter wheat that we're around 100 yard out,, they were long slips in my opinion,

I meant you would consider? I' am of the same opinion if your out for a big bag hoover them up without long slips. If I' am out just messing about 100 yard would be about my max I probably would not give that many of them as I prefer the action a bit closer where I can see it properly TBH.

A lot of factors to consider first but if I thought the dog could see the rabbit ,, and there was some chance of a catch,, then i I would consider slipping longer than 100 yard,,, but the dogs got to see it ,, I just don't believe these long 300 yard slips on the lamp,, as has already been said,, distance is well over exaggerated at night

 

The other night as an example,, I was at the hedge and they were sat right out,,, and the action was coming to me,,, mind she missed more than she cought,,

Do you use a blitz? there a bit over the top for rabbits IMO
