pointer 543
It's been hard to get out over the last couple of weeks with the wind and rain and when we did it's been a series of near misses. She managed to get a moorhen yesterday and a rabbit today. My hawk will now work with a dog she knows but if two are out together she seems to stay back a bit. Just another thing I'm working on. 1 Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
Pointer, look at that photo of her you posted again mate who would of thought a year back she would be sat there like that but fair play pal you done very well with her, like the dogs though lots of variables in season, no guarantees, frustrating innit? but the flush period will come it always does pal Quote Link to post
Mustelid 143
Hi Pointer. Are those pure gwp's? How do you rate them? I've been keen on one for sometime as an 'all rounder'... ferreting, shooting, ratting etc. The only ones I've seen though are huge dogs. Do the bitches level out a fair bit smaller? She has been a problem at times and I've had to learn and adapt along the way but then the work gets rewarded and it's all worthwhile. 1 Quote Link to post
pointer 543
Hi Pointer. Are those pure gwp's? How do you rate them? I've been keen on one for sometime as an 'all rounder'... ferreting, shooting, ratting etc. The only ones I've seen though are huge dogs. Do the bitches level out a fair bit smaller? The bitch on the right is my old Gwp lurcher. I did a fair bit with her but now she just wanders along. I still take her ratting sometimes and the odd bit of lamping but nothing much these days. She broke her neck at a year old and had a few more nasty injuries after that and she's a bit stiff now and probably arthritic but that's to be expected. The dog on the left is a big thing but very agile for his size, people have been left amazed at the way he can catch rats at awkward angles. He almost turns himself inside out lol. I'm no expert though but yeah the bitches are smaller. Personally I don't like the make and shape of some pointers Ive seen or the longer coats some seem to have. Mines been used for rough shooting, working alongside lurchers, out with hawks, ratting, ferreting and will mark a fox to ground. I like them but obviously they don't work cover like a spaniel, but mine will get into whatever he has to flush quarry. He seems to know what is needed on whatever land we are on. I've seen him get under and destroy stick piles next to rivers to push out rats or once a mink. The Gwp is certainly an allrounder but there are breeds better suited to some jobs but I couldn't keep a load of dogs even if I wanted to so I make do with what I have. I'm completely breed blind when it comes to the Gwp or Gwp lurchers lol. I just love to be out hunting with them. Quote Link to post
