what percentage of collie do you recommend?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what is the best mix on average. I dont have a huge amount of work for it, and wondered if a half cross collie greyhound might get a bit frustrated, but a 3/4 cross is a bit too greyhoundy. What are the average 5/8 greyhound 3/8 collie crosses like as dogs to work lightly and be sane in the house?

Try to avoid too much border collie if you are looking for a sane dog.

Go for working stock, take your time and look for the right pup.

Happy hunting

Thanks Sorley, sounds like good advice. What do others think? And what about percentage of collie to greyhound?

A lot would depend on what you will be expecting of the dog. also how much time you can spend with the dog too. If you get a good collie input then you are going to have a very smart dog on your hands. It will need lots of things to do and stimulus, otherwise it will get bored and then you could end up with one or two problems.

this my collie cross, i would go for the 3/4 cross, my pup has been very well behaved and relaxed in the house, and showing very promising signs for the futer when im working him to his full potential. just remeber if you go for a 3/4 X is could still eng up as stocky as say 3/8 5/8 (theres a thread somewhere all about the genes and breeding dogs). but a 1/2 cross will still work well on lamp and ferreting but take longer to mature.

im sure youll be happy with your choice and best of luck mate :good:

I like half crosses or half collie/greyhounds bred together, I have 2 and they have served me more than well over the years :notworthy: I did try the 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie cross but I lost such a large amount of stamina by going back to the greyhound it was a complete waste of time  The pup I kept was out of petrol after just a few runs, I might have just been unlucky but it put me right off trying again with a different 3/4 and I have always gone for lurcher x lurcher ever since. My mate bred some 5/8 Greyhound 3/8 Collies out of a reverse 3/4 bitch which was a good rabbiting dog to a pure greyhound and I think they did well, might be a mating I would do in the future, but Ive never needed to go much more than half collie for a rabbit dog as pure collies are fast enough to catch a few bunnies, so a half cross is more than enough for general rabbiting and mooching around. If your not doing much work with the dog then the 3/4 grey might be a better option, the one I reared certainly wasnt any good for more than just a few runs, some folk would be happy enough with that but I want a dog that has to be called in off the hill because its still raring to go.

my own preferece is a dog with a high percentage of collie blood in it , as they have plenty of brains , bags of stamina, good feet and coats and they are very versatile, my strain i work are on the smallish side, which is a plus point for me as the threequater breds can throw a little on the large side,. good luck in whatever choice you make. regards collie john.
