An open letter to England manager Roy Hodgson about Fraser Forster

Dear Roy,

You have many important decisions to make before England’s World Cup kicks off against Italy in June.

One of the most crucial surrounds your goalkeeper, or rather keepers. No doubt you will have three places available in your squad for that most specialist of positions and in my opinion one must go to Fraser Forster of Celtic.

Without doubt he has proved himself a winner – of titles and medals – and is a big man for the big stage.

Forster would thrive in Brazil, as he has already proven in the Champions League against gifted opponents from Barcelona to Moscow.

How often does the Spanish media – which described the giant Northumbrian as La Gran Muralla, or Great Wall – get itself into a lather about players from these islands? Hardly a regular occurrence.

Forster, you see, has quality in spades. He is a bright fellow who has developed apace at Celtic Park, with Neil Lennon recently describing him as someone he rates “very, very highly.”

We are led to believe that with the Hoops eliminated from Europe you have concerns about Forster’s suitability should he remain in Scotland until the season’s end.

Such fears are groundless.

Yes there is little doubt Celtic will win the Scottish Premiership with something to spare, but for all that the expectation levels remain higher at Parkhead than almost any other club in Britain.

Just look at how the players there have recalibrated their season, talking openly about focussing on an unbeaten run to May.

Such a thing could never happen in England though could it? Well Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ will give you the answer to that.

You see football north and south of the border is not so very different. In both countries there is a smorgasbord of clubs and players with contrasting abilities.

Ask John Ruddy, another candidate to understudy Joe Hart, who conceded seven goals against Manchester City in November.

Unlike the Norwich City man every goal that Forster allows past him is one too many, such is the glare he operates under.

With no offers in the pipeline Lennon has already made it plain he expects his goalkeeper to stay in harness beyond the January transfer window.

Indeed there is not an obvious vacancy for Forster in the top half of the Premier League where his case for international inclusion would be advanced.

No, having brought the former Newcastle man into your squad and handed him a debut it would be a waste of time, effort and talent, to then drop him at this stage.

Scotland, and Celtic in particular, is no backwater and in Fraser Forster you have a genuine challenger for the number one jersey.

Lucky you Roy.

"You see football north and south of the border is not so very different"

Can't believe some folk write this pish.

Sure Forster is a decent keeper and has had some good performances in europe but he's also let

in some howlers and for me he doesn't command his area especially from corners, think he'll make the squad

for the world cup but don't expect him to start.

Some of his performances has been superb and he can only get better when.playings for england, but to put him in at a world cup could be a gamble, in my view at present hes a bit slow for international football.
