jimmytwohand 13
Well if you have a silky smooth, accurate beast who cares what it looks like. don't forget some pics? you could leave it how it is.. or spraypaint it I actually quite like the lived in look it has. As you say who cares when its beautiful inside. Might hold off on the halford's matt black 2 for 1 special. The BSA is getting a coat as its authentic to 70s Brummie smithing. Ive spent an hour pulling cables from drawers and cant for the life of me find the right one to transfer the pics over onto the PC. Im proud enough that if it was possible they would be up by now! Cheers for the advice and poking Murphy into action. Quote Link to post

jimmytwohand 13
Happy New year to you too Skot and to one and all! A new rifle does do wonders for festive spirit doesn't it. Found the cable at last. There are some pics on google photos to have a look at for all those interested in surface rust pitting and West German engineering (hopefully you can all access that). Note the iron sight removal which i assume was done solely with a spoon and lots of swearing. Great post this, cheers all and a happy ending too. Its put right in the mood for some prehogmany plinking with my old before getting stuck into the beer tonight. Regards Chris. Best of luck to you! i've been watching the clouds since i got up this morning but signs of being able to have a blat do not look good. Think i've put a hex on the weather. I really need to get my skill set back up to par as soon as possible. It's such a perishable skill. Hopefully the muscles will regain their memory soon. Happy noo yar once again! thursodog 353
Cracking Sir! Can't beat the old timers on the build quality, shows a mile away on this beauty. Chris. Quote Link to post
jimmytwohand 13
Thank you Chris! The term "over engineered" springs to mind whenever i think of the HW80s. It'll just be this rifle and the cockroaches left in the ash of my house after the apocalypse. I'll be interested to hear back from Weihrauch what age it is, i'm guessing 1981-82 based on a 912898 S/N. Remarkable how crisp the safety is and how tight everything still seems after three decades. If anyone knows of anything i should be looking out for on a rifle this age (apart from a regular chrono check) I would be all ears. I'll stop being a lazy swine and go searching too though. I always used to errr.... "delegate" my maintenance duties to those whose toolkit consisted of more than a wallpaper scraper and a lump hammer. At the moment i'm operating on the "if it isn't broken..." principle. 1 Quote Link to post

villaman 9,983
Well isn't it just Murphy's Law, as soon as i get frustrated and ask for advice something pops up almost straight away. £150 and much rainfall applied directly to the face later i now have a HW80. Very early 80s (pre-million) mk1. Blueing is knackered, stock is dented and on the inside it is a cracker. I'm pretty sure it has had a tune as it is absolute silk to fire, no twangy spring noise at all, lovely recoil. Barrel is a beauty inside. Nice tight penny groups from the little i have managed to fire it before darkness and monsoon stopped play (and that's the first time i've shot since last century). Cheers for the advice peeps! I might have thought twice if i had seen Villa(gord bless em)man's post. Thats quite a deal on a 97. I wonder whether i can find a similar 77 in .177..... I have the urge to reacquire all of my lost rifles now.... We need more than blessing .we need a new owner with money and a manager with common sense and to bring back some pride at one of the great football clubs in this country. Quote Link to post
davyt63 1,845
hi Jimmy that is a good find buddy, and the HW80 is a great work horse get used to using it,and enjoy it! as you say if it aint broke etc...... buy the sounds of it any little work to be done on it is purely cosmetic, you may want to try some H&NFTT or AA fields or JSB exacts, these brands work well with the HW80 hope you have loads of fun with it buddy congrats! It's less scarred than me and we are of the same pedigree. Great way to plink in the new year! I've read very good things about the 97 and was always a fan of the 77 from FT days. Wish i had the skills for some fettling myself. Once i'm up to speed i'll be looking for a friendly farmer myself. I'm led to believe a friend of mine has an ex-gamekeeper pal with more perms than he can service. Fingers crossed. I do miss foggy winter mornings and crispy grass underfoot at dawn. Your memory tends to filter out this country's tendency to drench you on a regular basis though! Likewise on the best wishes pal! Have a good one! We need more than blessing .we need a new owner with money and a manager with common sense and to bring back some pride at one of the great football clubs in this country. I think the shock of an owner with money might kill me. Glad to see them leading the charge for terracing though. I don't really care about trophies i just enjoy seeing a team play with flair and heart. Not a lot of that going around anywhere. hi Jimmy that is a good find buddy, and the HW80 is a great work horse get used to using it,and enjoy it! as you say if it aint broke etc...... buy the sounds of it any little work to be done on it is purely cosmetic, you may want to try some H&NFTT or AA fields or JSB exacts, these brands work well with the HW80 hope you have loads of fun with it buddy congrats! Thanks man! It's good getting back into the technicalities of springer marksmanship. By the time i've run through a long check list in my head and i'm ready to let fly, the day to day annoyances and problems have been pushed out. I'd forgot how calming and therapeutic it is. Thanks for the pellet options, it's useful as i am drawing up a sampler list to see what she may prefer. Heard good things about the HN FTT but also read there may be a slightly wonky batch working through the retail chain. If i remember right my last would happily eat anything. I got a tin of Webley VMX performance chucked in with the old girl and tbh beyond 20-25 yards i think any pellet is performing better than i am at the moment. Definitely a lot of rust to shake off. Saying that i've put in a fair few penny 5 groups amongst the flyers (which ill be taking sole credit for for a while) so for a random pellet selection i cant really fault the VMX. Doesn't help when you only get 6 hours of daylight though and only 15 minutes of that when the weather isn't trying to drown you! Good luck to whoever ended up with my 77! That little missy would ONLY put in a show with crossmans from the boxes labeled #2, Seriously fussy eater but spectacular with that combo. Cost you a hundred quid in brands or lots of tea buying and pellet cadging down the club to figure that 77 out. Amazing how individual these mass produced "identical" rifles are. Thanks again all! I could only agree more if you added a terrible expletive as a prefix to each of your 3 words! Not sure why i ever let my interest fade. The intersection of the cerebral science and the instinctual art one finds in shooting these beasts is truly glorious. That's not just the new year spirit(s) talking.
