jimmytwohand 13
Hello all. I understand you get many threads of this nature. Before registering and posting i have read a good deal of them but i would still like to beg a little advice please. My introductory post is here. I am looking for a second hand springer to re-enter the hunting scene. I am a fan of quality internals. I have owned the HW77, HW80 and HW95 as well as the Air Arms RN-10 and have a strong bias for quality and accuracy. The HWs were all good enough to group inside a penny at 40 yards (with a small fettle and investment in pellet selection). The AA could put groups through a single pellet hole (well, to be fair 5mm groups with a .177 so not quite) out past 50 yards. I was horrified with some of the reviews of budget rifles i have been reading which say good accuracy at 25 yards, groups of an inch and a quarter +. I don't consider that good enough for hunting humanely, so most of the "good" new budget rifles around the £150 mark are out of the window. It's a shame as my budget is £150. I was expecting to be spoilt for choice in the £150 second hand market, i thought i could find dozens of 15 year old 80's for that money but apparently not. They seem to have not depreciated a single penny. I do not care whatsoever for appearance. Stocks can be knackered, blueing gone, as long as they are internally sound, consistent and accurate. I have only found the opposite, pretty things on the outside, but that appear to have been packed with mud before storing in a loft for a decade. These are also still mostly out of my price range. What are my chances of finding a Weihrauch (any) or something like a TX200 in my price range? Give up is an acceptable answer. Laughter seems to be an appropriate response from the dealers, but thats ok, laughter seems an appropriate response to their counteroffers of chinese tat. Any suggestions or hints from those more familiar with the current market appreciated. 2 Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Save up some more..? I got a near mint hw97k with scope bag and pellets for £250 a second hand hw will hold its value pretty well. and the older the better.. new ones do have quality issues.. get a second hand one and strip it down and give the internals a good polish and put some proper grease in and clean the barel and you should have a brilliantly accurate rifle .. who cares what it looks like,, spraypaint it your right about cheap guns not being accurate enough for hunting im not a snob or rich boy in any way shape or form, but for hunting I will use only the best accurate rifles. we owe that to the quarry to ensure we do our bit so they don't suffer,, cant guarantee that with the accuracy you don't get from a gamo... 2 Quote Link to post

Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
never had a 35 or an but my mate has and they were lovely rifles. im not keen on the 35 to be honest myself... but I already have enough rifles but this one at £150 is a decent price and I bet it shoots sweet . even if it doesn't it wouldn't be much cost and effort for a new piston seal breach seal and a mainspring. and its still better than any gamo/hatstand shyte 2 Quote Link to post

jimmytwohand 13
Thanks for the responses chaps. Had a flurry as soon as i looked away. I'm definitely not rich but i think my history of HW rifles has definitely turned me into a gun snob. I've tried a few competing brands and they just don't seem to have the quality there. Glad to see we are in agreement on the accuracy front. I may want to shoot stuff in the head so that i can eat it's heart but its no reason to let it suffer. I want it to be as close to click-of-the-fingers quick as possible, it is the way i would want to go. To be fair to the cheap brands they are probably much more accurate than i am at the moment after such a long break, lots of practice needed. They have their place i'm sure, from what i've seen and read though that place is not in the field. Funny you mentioned spray-painting. My currently disassembled BSA from 1979 was originally finished in gloss paint. While i'm doing the old one i was considering using the same technique on any new acquisition. After all, it will literally be dragged through a bush backwards many times, so who cares. Beauty for me is watching a rifle snowman a target time after time. Think you might be right on the saving front. Davy's Air Arms find looks nice for not much more money. Although you have found a good example in the 35. Looks like i may just scrape into the very early 80s too. I'm off on a 6 hour round trip shortly to look at an HW80. That may crystallize the decision more than anything. Thanks chaps, really good responses to help an old shooter back into the field. 3 Quote Link to post

jimmytwohand 13
Well isn't it just Murphy's Law, as soon as i get frustrated and ask for advice something pops up almost straight away. £150 and much rainfall applied directly to the face later i now have a HW80. Very early 80s (pre-million) mk1. Blueing is knackered, stock is dented and on the inside it is a cracker. I'm pretty sure it has had a tune as it is absolute silk to fire, no twangy spring noise at all, lovely recoil. Barrel is a beauty inside. Nice tight penny groups from the little i have managed to fire it before darkness and monsoon stopped play (and that's the first time i've shot since last century). Cheers for the advice peeps! I might have thought twice if i had seen Villa(gord bless em)man's post. Thats quite a deal on a 97. I wonder whether i can find a similar 77 in .177..... I have the urge to reacquire all of my lost rifles now.... 5 Quote Link to post
