Pre Locator Days

Recommended Posts

for us when we were able to locate without finders, we only did it with ferrets to start with as our paper rounds only paid 20 quid a week and we couldn't afford bleepers. we found that by being able to locate ferrets a fair few times we just did the same for terriers as they were easier to locate than ferrets but anything over 4ft was hard enough to locate accurately. but thank god for the inventor of finders as im sure they have saved many a dogs life.

Two from my familys digging dogs before I was born, dug badger on a regular basis, needless to say no locator.

Thankfully those days are gone. Several terriers to ground at once, earths destroyed forever with trenching, bars stuck through terriers and quarry, days wasted looking for dogs and then as your about

everybody digging to terriers should know how to locate them without a locater we done it for years as they hadnt invented them back then , i remember putting a russel to ground on a big sprawling ear

Not having a choice made us good at finding are terriers. Some people were better than others. Simple as that.

I agree but the t-bar aided us a lot.

admit it FM,you still use a t bar.....go admit it lol

I agree Jigsaw, bars and tongs (especially in leopard skin, LOL) are useful but in the wrong hands both are dangerous. I've said it before and I'll say it again about bars. They are the most over used piece of kit.

IMO it's no coincidence that the best men I've ever seen to work terriers didn't carry bars.

Maybe so Neil but we are talking pre-locater,not too many men dug without the use of a bar then, very important piece of kit back then and dont for 1 minute say you never used 1,lol as i know you did.

I have 4 of them and like you there's always one in the van. And yes, I used them, plenty. That's how I know when to use one and when not to use one.

True, before the locator they were an essential tool, like I said before, when a lad had a good bar he wouldn't let it out of his sight and there was many a row when one lad bent another lads bar, LOL.

One more word about the locators, the "new" avalanche rescue systems we're using now have been around for well over 20 years.

Think of all the terriers that could have been saved in those years.

Apart from the lack of a terrier , which Fatman pointed out, could I suggest a fair maiden to rub my tired back and shoulders like they did in the middle ages.

Good man Fatman, I could picture Jigsaw loading the vehicle with all the kit and then arriving at the farm to hunt and saying "where's the dog", LOL.

the dog doesnt come under ''equiptment'' lads, its part of the TEAM,get a grip now lol
