Two from my familys digging dogs before I was born, dug badger on a regular basis, needless to say no locator.

Thankfully those days are gone. Several terriers to ground at once, earths destroyed forever with trenching, bars stuck through terriers and quarry, days wasted looking for dogs and then as your about

everybody digging to terriers should know how to locate them without a locater we done it for years as they hadnt invented them back then , i remember putting a russel to ground on a big sprawling ear

great replies folks but one question to col100,,,,whats the hose pipe for????I had russells before and a percentage were bayers, they were very vocal to the extent you'd think they were being absolutely pulverised below ground and when you'd open up on them they'd be relatively unscathed,in fact the best sounder we ever had was a lump of a white terrier which was a 1st x bull/russell.we could work this dog knowing his voice was his main tool, but ironically we lost him in a sand burrow when he slipped his lead one day while out walking.one more question to throw out there,IF we were back in the good old days, would a sounder have the skill/tenacity to work the ultimate quarry and hold his ground till the light broke through.I think educated game,,,ie :game pre dug and released game, put that bit more pressure on the dog on the job.were there that many quality sounders capable of successfully finishing the job.as was said, there were a few practicing the art of ''ALL IN TOGETHER GIRLS''(OR MULTIPLE DOGS BEING USED IN ONE DIG) :D Is the quality of dog after improving over time?have the terrier folk that have been there and worn the t shirt refined their skills to near as perfect as they can?are all these questions simply drivel  .keep the topic going for another bit,see the folk involved?no arguing.............its afirkin miracle

White dogs were digging on this Island a lot longer than black dogs, digging badgers when it was legal to do so and they got the job done in harder conditions, ie no locaters and were to ground a lot longer for obvious reasons. We dug for the trials with white dogs(as did everybody)and we got plenty of stuff for the big day with them. Its a myth that dogs were put in two and three at a time,it was done, just the same as some clowns do it now.In my opinion there are a lot more shit dogs now, because they are not tried for long enough, they are found in five minutes and then dug out,you never hear of dogs being to ground for a number of days anymore because they can be found easy,I wonder would they stay that long? The first black dog I seen was brought down from Belfast by good wheaten men thats only twenty five years ago,up to that it was all white dogs.It is sad that the white ones are scarce now(our fault)we should have kept them as they were just as good as the blacks, they killed fox with ease, they dug badger regular with very little sick bay and kept there under jaw. There are some great lines of blacks out there, but there is a lot more dirt called digging dogs than ever before.Digging now is easy and we never had so much vermin roaming the fields posing as terrier men,the reason being the locator made it simple,I wonder how many would be digging if they had to give hours lying on there belly in rain and snow just to TRY and find the dog?

when we were kids we used to dig the railway banks alot and we had many a hairy moment we used to take it in turns to tunnel in with and old rope tied to your foot many atime we would be in 15 -20 foot and we had our fair share of cave in s f**k that now older and wiser we had a few close shave s one time my mate was in the tube about 12 -14 foot in diggin away and a big goods train went past and the lot caved in on him we dug like mad men and managed to drag him out but he was near deaths door we didnt know fck all about cpr but we made it up as we went along while one of us ran to the nearest house to phone the ambulance they kept him in for a week but he still has a limp he reckons we nearly pulled his foot off getting him out but being the silly youths we were we went back and dug it out to get the dog back , when i think back we lost some good lads when we were not much more than kids john wise fell in a corn dryer when out ratting and drowned a couple came of moterbikes and ended up inpalled on a spike fence and afair few few other accidents

Even with locaters I've seen dogs lost to ground, the old knocker box was good when it was working. Manys a time over the years they got wet even when taped up or interference with electricity pile ons etc. I remember putting a fox into a concrete pipe and dropping a mates red fell dog. There was an electricity pile on in the field, We couldn't get a mark on the dog with the interference so after hours off listening crawling about to no avail we sent for another dog even though it wasn't practical because all we had was the grey knockers so what was to say we'd not loose two dogs? The second dog was entered but without any significant difference made. Only the help of the farmer to the run off the pipe we probed about and broke in and could hear the second dog baying away a fair bit on up, so we got to them shortly after. The red fell was dead in water 1 dead fox in front of him and two live foxes in behind.

We lost a really good dog to ground in a big place one time. He never surfaced, it would have been a different story with the bellman seeing the grey box only went to 15ft and the dog was out of range, only they came about a few years too late. I like to locate a terrier before turning the box on anyway, just a habit. Done it yesterday but It was only a 0.9 dig so wouldn't be giving any pats on the back for that one. Lol. Good thread.

Remember entering a ferret in a huge place in the middle of a field after seeing about 20 rabbits run in to it.We had only got the grey box a couple of weeks earlier and did not really know much about it.There was also a local radio station about half a mile away and after no rabbit bolted we said not to worry we will dig to the ferret using the locater. My mate turned it on and 1st thing we heard was the birdy song,f*****g hilarious, waited about 2 hours for the ferret to eventually reappear.
At least the music kept you's occupied Fat man lol

Yeah,Bollocks froze of us waiting for the poxy ferret to reappear,i never want to hear that f***ing song again. The old grey box were very accurate but beside a pylon or even an electric fence line they were useless.Another time we were diging to a dog between a shed and about 40yds of a gap to the farmers house. We kept geting interference with the box, ticking away 1 minute scraping like f**k next, but we were geting a mark and diging away until the graft almost lit up in my mates hands, the farmer had brought power to the sheds under ground and my mate had just sliced through the cable, fuuny at the time but also dangerous, got the terrier and fox and told the farmer what had happened,he just went to the fuse box turned of the power, joined the cable again and told us to backfill and let him know next time we were doing that earth.

you reminded me of a time we were digging at the butt of a ditch, cut through a water supply pipe, bloody 7 ft high spray of water and we had no choice but to keep digging to get the dog,who was completely unaware there were gallons of water being issued every few seconds, when we broke in through the mud we nearly drowned the dog in the stop end,he didnt have a clue what was happening, the poor animal.we were caked in mud and soaked to the skin, slipping and sliding in the quagmire and when we drew the game out it was soaked as well.to top it all it was fukin freezing the same day,we went and told the farmer and he said no bother, since ye broke it ye can fix it, so one of the lads worked at reconnecting the pipes together to the belly laughing of his mates.since then I ALWAYS have a change of clothes I like being warm and dry, lol.I throw out these questions liam to get the topic moving along,I know some of the answers to the queries I put out but they got to be asked, lol .its an interesting read for all involved no doubt.

post-14423-0-87585000-1388244367_thumb.jpgLost this old timer in a SIMPLE hole when the grey box acted up.I brought up an experienced digging gang from Roscrea but no joy.We dug out the whole hill,we even let in a good dog with a b and F and no sign,it is still a mystery to me what happened. He could not have got out over night because I blocked the entrance with bars,he was brought out of retirement just to give him a run in a handy one.I bought the b and f the following week when it was to late.We once dug him out from under the foundations of a house with kangos. He bit loads of people when we asked them to pick him up from a dig LOL,a quiet dog but he had no sense of humour when a stranger(to him)tried to take him away from what he liked doing.
